Hackensack is a city in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 61,711 at the 2010 census. Hackensack has been inhabited by humans since before the Palisades were built. The area that now includes Hackensack was first settled by Dutch and English colonists in 1624 and became part of Bergen County in 1774.Gunpowder had been invented by alchemists in China some 2,500 years ago and it was only after European exploration began that powder weapons became available to Europeans. In the early 18th century, British forces captured Manhattan from the Dutch and established an English garrison there; this led to increased demand for firearms throughout much of Europe. By 1776, all of North America had become embroiled in a bloody French-American War which saw American forces capture Quebec City from France; this event forced Britain to begin importing arms from Europe instead of manufacturing them domestically. In 1776, Hackensack resident Nicholas-Jacques Conte patented gunpowder technology which would revolutionize warfare; he designed a cannon that could be fired using small rounds rather than cannons being constructed with huge shot beds. This innovation would lead to the development of artillery as we know it today and ultimately make war much more efficient and destructive than ever before possible.Hackensack was one of many towns located along the Palisades Interstate Highway system during the late 20th century when traffic congestion caused by numerous factories made travel between these areas difficult or impossible
