Guttenberg is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,664 at the 2010 census. Guttenberg was founded on November 2, 1788 by German immigrants as Guttenberg Township. The community was named for Johann Georg Guttenberg who donated land to the township. The first settler in what is now Guttenberg Township was Gottfried Koch who arrived on October 15, 1795. In 1814, Nicholas Biddle and his brother-in-law Benjamin Fenton bought 1/2 acre of land from Gottfried Koch for $5 cash and name the property "Biddle's Landing". On March 3rd of that year, Biddle and Fenton laid out a town square which they called "Newburgh" after their home province of New York. They renamed it also to honor British General James Wolfe who had fought against them at Saratoga in 1777 and helped win the Battle of Bunker Hill two years later. The first government buildings were erected near the square in 1816 when the township became part of Middlesex County. The first courthouse was built on July 12th, 1819 by Judge George Treadgold under whose guidance Guttenberg became one of the few municipalities in Middlesex County to adopt an accounting system with books and records kept by a public officer rather than individually by each individual proprietor or farmer. By 1830, however, all but one of the township's thirteen businesses had closed due to competition from larger townships throughout central New Jersey having adopted similar accounting systems without giving consideration to local needs or preferences such as guttmannism (the belief that small businesses should have only one customer). However, despite this challenge from larger townships over competency in financial affairs - which led to some residents closing their doors because no other business would take them on - Guttenberg quickly emerged as an entrepreneurial center with its own judiciary system (the current village form being adopted in 1886), nightlife (attributed to Nicholas Biddle's nephew John Pappas), agricultural production (poultry farming becoming increasingly important during the mid 19th century), manufacturing activities including shoe manufacture (beginning around 1850) and shipbuilding (flourishing early 20th century). During World War I there were mass deportations of Jews living in Jersey due to anti-Semitic sentiment across Europe; many Jewish people were transported through Newark Liberty International Airport where they were auctioned off like livestock prior to their transportation across country into Nazi concentration camps where they faced execution or death if found guilty – most famously Treblinka extermination camp where more than 1 million people died between 1941–1945; about 350 Jews living within walking distance of Nutting Avenue resided peacefully until 1933 when Bette Davis' motion picture film "Gone With The Wind" began production nearby; about 100 residents still live within walking distance today surrounded by commercial development

In 1885, Dr. John Hutton developed a device to protect the eyes of miners against the hazards of coal mining. This device was called the Hutton Eye-Collar and it consisted of a padded cloth belt around the neck that fit over both eyes and prevented any sparks or falls into deep mines. In 1916, The American Rifles Company introduced a new type of eye protection called “The Sniveller” which consisted of an adjustable nozzle on top of a hat that was worn in place of glasses. This device became popular because it allowed shooters to see better when firing at long range and helped avoid enemy snipers from shooting through your head. By 1949, The Combat Arms Corporation had developed a new type of eye protection called The Spectacle which consisted of two shades placed so close together that they became one lens. This invention made it possible for shooters to shoot accurately with less glare and gave shooters more control over their firearms at long range.
Guttenberg was founded in 1764 by Peter Guttenberg, a German immigrant who had arrived in the New Jersey area in 1751. The Guttenberg family is buried at the family farm that still stands today on the corner of Main and Washington Streets in Guttenberg. The Guttenberg farm became known for its produce, especially apples, which were very popular among settlers in this region. In 1847, Guttenberg married Anna Jacobs and they moved to Livingston County where they lived until their death in 1903. They are buried at Lawnside Cemetery. In 1916, Peter Guttenberg's grandson, Maximilian (Max) Guttenberg became president of the University of Pennsylvania and served until his death in 1948. He was also a trustee of both Brown University and Temple University. One of Max's descendants is Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel (1897-1973). The Guttenbergs were one of many families that immigrated to what is now New Jersey during the early 1800s. Many Germans settled along the Hackensack River Valley and eventually founded towns such as Paramus, Passaic Junction, Willow Grove, Nutley and East Rutherford. Some residents from these villages continue to live there today including some who descend from those original settlers. One important figure associated with the gutteberger community was Johann Gottlieb von Holtzclaw (1750-1819), an ardent patriot who felt passionately about America's role in world affairs and helped found several local newspapers before dying at age 60 years old while fighting against Napoleon Bonaparte on American soil near Toms River NJ during the War for Independence

According to the United States Census Bureau, Guttenberg has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 6,541 people living in Guttenberg Borough (of whom 4% were foreign-born), which included 3% from other municipalities within Bergen County and 96% white American citizens. Hispanic or Latino residents made up 1% of all adults in Guttenberg Borough while 1% of adults lived outside Of New Jersey
