After the war, many of these guns were traded or given to various organizations such as local militias or privateers. In 1857, Guttenberg gunsmith John Darnold imported an English made Enfield Rifle for use by troops stationed at Fort Snelling in Minneapolis Minnesota during the American Civil War. Guttenberg, New Jersey is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark– Camden metropolitan area. The Guttenberg name comes from two German settlers named Johannes and Hieronymus Guttenberg who founded a farm in what is now Guttenberg Township on Long Island in 1685. In 1713, Nicholas Wessels purchased land east of the Hackensack River from the Guttenberg family and renamed it Wesselstown after him. The first post office called Guttenberg was established in 1735. In 1848, John Fenton erected a small blockhouse on Castle Hill overlooking the Hackensack River as an observation point for soldiers guarding Fort George during the War of 1812. In 1850, he donated land to form what is now East Orange Township which became part of Bergen County in 1876. The first settler to arrive in what is now Guttenberg township was Johannes Guttenberg who arrived with his family on September 16, 1685 and began farming near present-day Harrison Avenue and Market Street. He named his farm "Guttenburg" after his father's home country Germany (Hessen). Johann Gottlieb Grosse built a gristmill on current-day Harrison Avenue in 1698; this mill still stands today and produces flour for local markets and restaurants across New Jersey. In 1800, Nicholas Wessels acquired some additional property east of the Hackensack River from Johann Gottlieb Grosse and renamed it Wesselstown after him also becoming its first resident postmaster. This later changed to East Orange Township when it formed part of Bergen County in 1876 according to law passed by NJ Assemblyman William Bendixen (D-Newark), Jr.. James Meeks settled at present-day Harrison Avenue and Market Street where he operated a ferry service crossing the Hackensack River into Newark until 1830 when he replaced Ferryman John Fitzpatrick as sole proprietor operator along riverfrontage beginning at Ferry Road north of Market Street between Ridgewood Avenue (now Bloomfield)and Livingston Avenue (now Union City). At that time there were 2 ferry crossings daily with passengers boarding/disembarking one upstream/ downstream from shore while goods were carried overland downriver traveling via Broome Street bridge before being transported back upriver again for transport ashore following landing at Harriman Pier opposite Rutgers University; see map below: By 1830 Meeks had transferred all ferry operations ashore to his own premises giving rise to present day Harrison Ave., Bloomsbury Ave., Dutch Rd., & Market St.- only 1 mile south of then Rutgers Univ.(present day Amherst St.) . From here passengers could either walk or take busloads of buses each morning or afternoon directly to various destinations including Rutgers Univ.(present day Pembroke Rd.), Penn Station(now PATH), South Ferry(now waterfront park), etc... Today there are no public transportation services available within town limits so residents must rely upon personal cars or truck drives... For many years prior thereto private ferries ran between Nutting Harbor (~northwest corner BLK OF HARRISON AVE./RIDgewOOD AVENUE)& Ferry Road (~southwest corner RIDGEWALK AVE.) just beyond town limits providing convenient access both inside & outside townlimits - but due mainlyto high demand by students commuting towalks within town (& without affecting gas prices)--ferries have been discontinued entirely since December 2002! Today onlyPATH provides intra-town transportation egress/ ingress... Although once one of very few major commercial areas within gut tenberland [sic]--today gut tenberland [sic] consists largelyof mostlyresidential streets & primary businesses are located primarilyin outlying areas such asHackensack Valley[sic], Perth Amboy[sic], Caldwell[sic], Paramus[sic], Edison Junction[sic], etc.--much remains unchanged despite overwhelming growth over past several decades Since its founding as an agricultural township on Long Island Sound in 1685 by two Germans named Johannes und Hieronymus Guttenberg,"Guttenberg" has been spelled "Gutteridge", "Guthridge", "Haggerty", "Haagarty", "Hagarthorp", "Hackettney", ""Hackensee"" and finally simply "Gut Tenberland."
