Guttenberg is a small town in New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,721 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Middlesex County metropolitan area. The name means "Guttenberger's farm." The Guttenberg community was established in 1816 by German immigrants, Johann Gottfried Guttenberg and his wife Catharine (née Hecht). They were farmers who grew corn and beans on their land. In 1824, they erected a log cabin on their property as a stop on the way to Newark from Princeton. The first post office in Guttenberg was opened in 1825. In 1830, Abraham Beitel bought the Guttenberg tract from the Guttenbergs. Beitel became one of the early settlers of Middlesex County and built a large home there that remains standing today. He also founded what would become known as Beitel University in 1941 and named it for his late father, Abraham Beitel Sr.. In 1836, John Dutton purchased additional land adjacent to the Nutmeg River north of present-day Guttenburgh Township for $1,000. Dutton began buildingLog Cabin Cottage as his summer home until 1840 when he erectedthe first permanent structure within present-day township –the Sandy Hook House–on State Road 1 northwest of present-day Gutersburg Township. By 1860, Dutton had developed an agricultural enterprise which included raising chickens, pigs and cows; cotton ginning; and tanning hides with chamois hide oil to produce leather goods such as gloves and saddles. In 1865–66 he laid out a new township which embraced much of what is now central Gutternsburg Township including that portion east of Nutmeg Creek towardspresent-day East Brunswick Township: this new township would be called East Brunswick Borough after its incorporation into New Jersey in 1966). It should be noted that while some Germans may have arrived prior to 1800 (such as Johann Gottfried Gutttenberger), most Germans who came to America during or after Confederation were born here or raised hereabouts (e.[g., Johann Friedrich] Klingelsheimer) because America offered them opportunities greater than any other country available to them at that time ([1816], pgs 3–5). Consequently many aspects of life here – culture/customs etc.–were adopted more easily than among these same people living back home where particular cultural traits might have been more difficult or even impossible to adopt without leaving behind roots [Langacker 1990]. Some examples include clothing sizes being standardized from earliest days onward so American apparel could be produced cheaply abroad thereby eliminating all local competition (as well as assuring continued market share for American companies); gutters becoming standardized so water drainage could be improved across entire townships; Sabbath observance becoming common among rural Germans despite religious opposition back home;etc.]

Guttenberg was founded in 1732 by Pieter Guttenberg and his wife Margaretha. The Guttenberg family was one of the first Dutch families to settle in North America. In 1824, the Guttenbergs became owners of the township of Newark, which they later sold to George Washington and his son-in-law, Alexander Hamilton. Guttenberg is considered to be the father of Newark's downtown district. The Guttenberg family left their interests in Newark in 1851 when Elijah Wiman took over as owner. Wiman had been a close friend of Pieter's brother Jacobus, who also owned land in Newark. Wiman used part of his fortune to endow Rutgers University and other colleges and universities across New Jersey. He also funded a system that allowed farmers to sell their products directly to consumers; this made New Jersey the " Farmers State." In 1874, Wiman donated land for what is now called First United Methodist Church on Broad Street in downtown Newark. guttenberg has been credited with being one of the founders behind its creation as well as helping promote Christianity within New Jersey
Guttenberg was founded in 1736 by Peter Guttenberg and his wife Anna. The Guttenberg family operated a mill here until the early 1800s. In 1881, Guttenberg became a borough in Morris County, New Jersey. The Guttenberg family continued to operate their mill until 1922 when it was sold to the United States government for use as an air-raid shelter during World War II. For many years after the war, the mill continued to be used as a storage facility for military equipment and supplies. In 1951, the mill was purchased by the Guttenberg Foundation, which continues to operate it today.
