In 1802, New Jersey became a state; Guttenberg became one of its initial townships. In 1834, George Washington Carver moved his family from rural Maryland to present-day Hasbrouck Heights to live on land that he had purchased east of Center Township near where his grandson later established Carver Farms Mall and other businesses around 1950. From then until 1925 when local politics forced him into retirement after many years as a trustee of Oneonta Savings Bank & Trust Company - one of New Jersey's largest commercial institutions - Carver led an unbroken line of leadership throughout most if not all aspects of village life including service on township boards and county committees during several terms prior thereto through 1964 unbrokenly serving continuously thereafter until his death at age 89 years old on November 24th 1965 surrounded by many friends past and present who remembered him fondly within those days alive or since then...
