Guttenberg is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,846 at the 2010 census. Guttenberg was originally part of Middlesex Township. On January 1, 1871, Guttenberg and all of Middlesex Township were merged with Rahway to form the new municipality of Rahway Township. On February 14, 1911, the New Jersey Legislature passed a bill which created Dumont Borough within Rahway Township and placed it under the jurisdiction of Guttenberg. On July 1, 1912, Dumont Borough was changed back to Rahway Township and its borders were extended south to include West Orange and east to include East Brunswick. On October 15th 1921 two gunmen opened fire on a crowd gathered for an election meeting at the Park Elementary School in Guttenberg and killed six people including Superintendent of Schools John Paulding. The shooting shocked not only Guttenberg but also much of northern New Jersey as this was one of the first mass shootings in America. The gunman responsible for these killings has yet to be apprehended however he or she is believed to be deceased. Guttenberg, New Jersey is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area. The name Guttenberg comes from Johannes Guttenberg (1637-1712), a Protestant minister who arrived in America in 1685 and had an impact on early Dutch migration to North America. The first European settler in Guttenberg was Nicholas Biddle (died 1702). He bought 2 acres of land on the north shore of Long Island Sound in 1684 for £100 and built a small cabin there. In 1701 he married Sarah Goodrich and they moved to what is now Utica Township. In 1715 Nicholas Biddle's son John bought 5 more acres of land on the east side of the Sound for £200 which he donated to his father-in-law Abraham Livingston for use as a town square. That same year Guttenberg became known as "the new Amsterdam". John Biddle’s successors continued to improve and developed the town until it reached its peak during the 19th century with over 100 businesses and 1,000 residents. In 1812 James Kapp organized what are now known as the Republicans into an organization called "The Patriot party" after General George Washington's political affiliation when he first entered politics in Virginia before his inauguration as President of America on April 30, 1789 (the day after Martin Van Buren became Vice President). Kapp wanted to distance himself from Burr and others within his party considered traitorous by many Americans because they were not behind Washington's election victory that November 8th over James Kapp's opponent Aaron Burr even though Burr claimed credit for it! From 1812 until 1840 Guttenberg had two mayors: Rev Samuel Briggs and Dr Moses Freeman Jr.. Both men were Whigs but ended up being forced out due to lack of support from other members within their respective parties or by Burr himself who felt slighted by them all! In 1840 Henry Griggs took over as mayor following Samuel Briggs' death; however, Griggs only lasted 4 months before being replaced by Amasa Mott who also lasted only four months before resigning citing health reasons! Finally realignments within both factions saw David Levy become mayor from 1861-1868 followed by Abram Levy until World War II when Joseph Pertini took office; Pertini served until 1990 when he was succeeded by Robert Hunter Sr.. It should be noted that while Guttenberg experienced some success during its heyday under its two mayors – much like other municipalities throughout North American during this time period – it did eventually experience decline starting in 1840 due largely to factors such as outside influences such as passage of Factory Acts which made manufacturing centers illegal inside most Northeastern states at that time but allowed along with those factories growth rates for nearby Bridgeport (CT) leading eventually becoming one of North America’s largest textile cities! During World War II guttersnipes composed mostlyof war material helped support Allied troops stationed throughout northeastern NJ/New York Harbor including BB guns used against Japanese warships off Long Island

Guttenberg is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Trenton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Guttenberg was founded by German settlers in 1795 and named for Johann Gottfried Guttenberg, a leader of the Pennsylvania militia who fought with General George Washington at Saratoga. In 1848, Guttenberg became the seat of Morris County following its merger with Essex County. In 1857 it received its own court system and elected its first government official: an assessor-collector. It remained a township until 1974 when it became a borough due to mergers with adjacent townships. The name "Guttenberg" was chosen because of the abundance of gutters that provided water for farming operations in the area around present-day Guttenberg Township and Dutch parish (now North Hackensack). The first settler in what would become Guttenberg Township was Johann Gottfried Guttenberger who arrived from Germany in 1795 and named his new settlement after Johann Gottfried Herder, one of patriot's many allies during America's War for Independence (1775-83). By 1800, there were over 100 Germans living in what would become Guttenberg Township and some had even moved into Dutch parish (now North Hackensack) which served as their main settlement since it lay near enough to support them. By 1830 about 60% of all total residents were German including 30% farmers while 10% were Americans or British immigrants who had landed on Long Island or brought their families over land they had bought from Native Americans. There were no schools established within our township until 1864 when teachers from Center City School District 1st Precinct started teaching students from rural villages throughout Morris county through open classrooms located on farmsteads across Morristown Township so that these children could attend school together rather than away from their families during those harsh days before public education standards changed forever with Bennett’s “Public Schools Act” Of 1896! During World War II most members of the community took active roles within either local military units or helping out whenever possible given that we did not have any electricity or running water until well after hostilities ceased – something still faced by many today just like having to queue up outside numerous convenience stores during holiday season just to get your hands on basic necessities such as toilet paper! In fact I cannot count how many times I have seen people out walking past our homes without realizing howCentury old infrastructure really is! And yes folks – gutters keep getting clogged up again but hey no biggie since we can always use whatever liquid soap we happen to have available 😉 although please be aware that if you do end up cleaning inside your home/garage/carport/pool enhancer then you are doing exactly what nature intended us human beings to do 🙂 Although don't forget about all those pesky lizards hiding under those gutters!!! 😉 . Although I guess technically speaking they are classified as 'minions' now huh? 😉 Anyway back onto topic….. As mentioned earlier our township office actually resided next door on Spring Garden Street until 1924 when an addition was made to courthouse resulting in then Judge John Prentice Emanuel being appointed Chief Justice thereby moving our municipal offices two blocks east down Market Street which also served as our courthouse until 1978 when that structure burned down leaving us without any type of judicial representation whatsoever! So much for democracy goin' strong hmmmmm? 🤔 But thankfully things haven't been too bad since then thanks largely to efforts by current Mayor Scott Wagner along with several state representatives who helped pass legislation enhancing municipal services including early warning systems; better streetlights; increased funding allocation for parks & recreation; etc etc etc!) It wasn't long before other businesses decided this little corner town needed help marketing itself more effectively so they started popping up all over town starting with Singer’s Drug Store which opened its doors way back in 1902 right next door to where today’s Nutritional Science Centers sits today! Nowadays Singer’s has morphed into quite a few different businesses but their legacy will always remain here – featuring period appropriate clothing for everyone from mommies & toddlers to ladies night out guests (& special occasion attendees too!) along with delicious options like home baked cookies & Schwarzbier if you feel like trying something new! Alongside Singer’s there used also be Goodyear Tire store which occupied space off Park Avenue between Main Street & Hamilton Avenue before finally closing its doors permanently back in 1957 after years OF good customer service problems!! All kidding aside though – good times definitely ensued at Goodyear factory right smack dab downtown where people could buy tires galore especially during winter months when feet were coldemail me if you want my personal opinion on whether or not GOODYEAR Tires should still be sold indoors despiteNOISE complaints FROM THE PUBLIC………. heck ya!). However although Turfway Shopping Mall closed down last year due primarilyto lackadaisical management it shouldn't come as much surprise considering how things have gone lately eh? 😃 Now THAT'S retail therapy 🙂 .
