In Guttenberg, New Jersey, there are over 20 firearms manufacturers and retailers. The Guttenberg Gun Show is one of the most important firearms shows in the tri-state area. It takes place each year in October and features more than 50 exhibitors from all over New Jersey as well as Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland. Guttenberg was once a center for gun manufacturing. In 1892, Guttenberg's first manufacturer of handguns, Wm. Hagedorn & Sons, became the second company to mass produce revolvers in the United States after Colt Manufacturing Company. At that time, Guttenberg was home to some of America's leading revolvermakers such as Browning & Co., Savage Arms Corporation and Stevens Pistols AG. The town has also been known for its rifle production since the early 1800s. One of Guttenberg's first rifle manufacturers was John Cramer who founded Fortunato Rifle Works in 1837. In 1860, Charles Sibley started his own gun factory here called Sibley & Richardson which produced rifles until 1865 when it merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company to become Winchester Firearms Company Incorporated (Winchester). From 1886-1892 both companies made shotguns under their own name before merging again to form Winchester Repeating Arms Company Ltd., makers of shotguns until 1907 when they were bought by Remington Arms Corporation (now Remington) and absorbed into their parent company; Samford Rifle & Shotgun Manufacturing Company Incorporated (later renamed Samford Firearms Corporation). The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution states that “A well regulated militia, being necessary to defend our liberty, shall not be infringed” This amendment was written during a time when militias were not needed anymore because of advances in technology. Guttenberg is a small town in New Jersey, United States. Guttenberg was founded in 1714 by Peter Guttenberg and his wife, Maria. The Guttenbergs were the earliest European settler in what is now Hudson County. The Guttenbergs began trading with the Lenape people during their early explorations of the area and eventually built a home on the present-day site of downtown Guttenberg. In 1814, Peter's son Jacob moved to Guttenberg from Morristown and started a grocery store. In 1827, John Fenton opened a store in downtown Guttenberg which became one of the most popular businesses in town. In 1877, gutttenberger family member Julius Shuler donated land to build an Industrial Park that remains today one of the most iconic landmarks in town. The park included several large mills including the first industry in New Jersey using gasfired power plants for operations. These mills produced lumber, paper products, automobiles and other goods until they closed down around World War II. The name "Guttenberg" came about when Johann Gottfried Herder mentioned it while traveling through areas near Lake George; he called these lands "Hudsonia". At first English speakers thought this referred to an apple orchard (possibly located near modern-day Sayreville), but upon further research it seems likely that someone at least knew of Abraham Ortelius' map of North America which used this term as part of its title page subtitle - Americas Map No 2: Netherland & Canada

The first settler of Guttenberg Township was George Guttenberg. In 1814, the township was formed from parts of Burlington Township and became part of Mercer County.
