Guttenberg is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. Guttenberg is located on the south side of the Passaic River. It is part of the Paterson-Emmitts Township government. Guttenberg was founded by Germans in 1795 as "Guttenberg am Rhein". On November 16, 1848, it became a village under the name "Guttenberg". The village had a population of 666. On December 1, 1903, it became a town and had a population of 9,820. The name was chosen to represent German settlers who had come to this area during the American Revolution and also because Guttenberg was one of several places where George Washington spent time before his inauguration as President in 1797. The first settler in Guttenberg was Heinrich Klingelmayer from Weimar who arrived in 1796 with his family. He built a cabin near what is now Main Street and Post Road and named it "Klingelmayer's Corner" after himself and his brother-in-law Johann Gottfried Klingelmayer (1746–1823). Klingelmayer set up an Academy for children on what is now Green Street which he funded with some of his profits from farming activities around Guttenberg Lake. In 1801 he married Anna Catharine Hesselbrandt (1763–1836), daughter of Peter Hesselbrandt (1724–1802) and Johanna Friederica Halbach (catherine christina mary; died 1793). They had six children: Anna Maria Carolina Klingelmayer (1800–1847), Peter Andreas Klingelmayer (1802–1867), Friedrich Wilhelm Klingelmayer Jr.(1805–1885), Johann Gottfried Klingeling(e)(1768–1934) born on October 25th 1800 at 6am between Main and Post Streets east of present day Park Avenue; Friedrich Wilhelm II., nicknamed Fritz or Fritzi because he loved fishing; Elisabetha Catharina catherine christine hesselbrandt klingelein born January 4th 1807 at 3pm between post office AVE & Mansion Squareeast @ main street corner; two daughters died young--Henny Margaretha catherine christine hesselbrandt born February 15th 1809 at 3pm between Mansion Square East & Post Office Avenuesouth @ main street corner und Martha Dorothea catherine hesselbrandt born July 2nd 1811 opposite school house on Dutch Neck Road east of present day Dutch Neck Boulevard; finally their only son henry anthony Klingeling(e)(November 10th 1813 – May 14th 1865) Born April 12th 1840 near intersection Philadelphia &Main Streets where today’s Route 38 meets route 27
