Guttenberg is a small town in New Jersey, United States. It is located on the western side of the state. The population was 5,853 at the 2010 census. Guttenberg was established in 1777 and became a borough in 1871. Guttenberg is named after Johann Georg Guttenberg, a German gentleman who donated money to fund the town's establishment. The first settler in what would become Guttenberg was Jonas de Bry, who arrived in 1777 and erected a log cabin on the present site of guttenberger square. In 1821, John Hickey founded another permanent settler camp called "Hickory Hill." By 1830, there were twelve families living here; by 1840 there were twenty-eight families living here. The early settlers mined coal from nearby hills and brought it to their homes for cooking and heating needs until 1851 when a locomotive derailed near the square and created an area that now forms part of downtown Guttenberg. In 1856, Augustus Calkins opened what would become one of America's first commercial stores selling groceries from his family's farmstand on Main Street. This store quickly became well known throughout northwestern New Jersey for its great selection of local products as well as its wide variety of items unavailable elsewhere. In 1865, Julius Weingarten opened his own grocery store adjacent to Calkins' store on Second Avenue which soon grew into one of North Jersey's leading grocery chains with over two hundred stores throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania by 1895! Over time much smaller businesses have also operated within Downtown Guttenberg: bakeries (1925), shoe stores (1935), beauty parlors (1971), dry cleaners (1993), bank (1976) and post office (1983). Today Downtown Gutternberg remains an active business district with several thousand residents - many who continue to operate their businesses within the same walls that once housed their ancestors!
