Gloucester City is a city in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 34,699 at the 2010 census. As a result, many people still refer to themselves as "Sir Nicholas Gloucestershire." The first documented reference to Gloucester City came with a grant by King Philip II of Spain to Sir William Penn on October 17th, 1683. Penn had sent two men - one carrying flags and another leading horses -to purchase land along the river Raritan near New Brunswick in what is now Union Township. The grant also included grants for various other settlements located within present day Union Township including West Milford and Easton. In 1686, these areas were consolidated into what is now Middlesex County under then Lieutenant Governor Thomas Mifflin. Middlesex County was formed on April 7th, 1702 when portions of Essex County were added west of Trenton across from Princeton University's campus over objections from Mayor Richard Stockton Jr., who argued that his borough should have been part of Somerville instead due to its close proximity thereto. The area that would become Gloucester City was annexed by Middlesex on November 3rd, 1702 following Stockton's victory over Queen Anne's troops at Brandywine Creek near Philadelphia. At this time, much of what are now eastern Union Township and western Woodbridge Township were still part of Burlington County; however parts of today's northeastern section including some streets in Center Grove Heights) were annexed into Middlesex due primarily to political considerations surrounding wars with England (the American Revolution) and France (the French Revolutionary Wars). In 1834, Worcester resident James Kapp founded J & J Kapp Bros., which became one of America’s earliest department stores open to the public with its first location at Eighth Street and Market Place in downtown Worcester before expanding throughout central Massachusetts through shops such as Marshall Field’s Department Store and Bigelow’s Hardware House before opening its first store outside Boston in 1857 inside Fenway Park where it remains today as Macy’s Corporation flagship store (#5). On December 12, 1957, during the height of protests against McCarthyism throughout America following the US Attorney General's appointment of James Fenton as special prosecutor to investigate communist ties within government agencies such as FBI and CIA - including those within New York City - several thousand people demonstrating outside local businesses in front of Municipal Hall took up arms against police personnel attempting to clear away demonstrators with tear gas grenades when riot units were called there support only later learning that this was not an event planned or authorized by Mayor Richard Jaffe or any other officials involved with municipal governance within days following these events; subsequent investigations found no evidence linking Mayor Jaffe or any other officials directly or indirectly with any acts or omissions regarding these events leading to his impeachment proceedings being eventually dropped charges against him months later resulting in his resignation from office effective February 1st 1967 – shortly before he faced re-election bid challenges from more ardent communists seeking his successor amidst growing community unrest over race relations among other topics increasingly becoming politicized amid a general increase in political partisanship across all levels nationally despite increasing public distrust towards both major political parties
