Gloucester City is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 26,887. The name is derived from English Village and its original location on a bend in the Raritan River. The first Europeans to visit what is now Gloucester City were Dutch traders who landed there in 1609. In 1764, William Drummond established an ironworks here and named it for his father-in-law Lord Chesterfield (the 3rd Viscount Melbourne). The town reached its peak as a manufacturing center during World War II with production of munitions and other products such as cars and airplanes. However, since then the economy has been decline due to various factors including suburban development around the area. Gloucester City formed part of Union Township until 1800 when it became part of Morris County. On February 14, 1814, it merged with Rahway into one municipality which was renamed Gloucester City on October 15th that year by act of the New Jersey Legislature under the direction of Governor John Cogan. According to the United States Census Bureau, Gloucester City has a total area of , all land.

This is likely due to concerns about potential injuries or death from being Stunned without prior warning or opportunity to fight back (i.e., using pepper spray or other types of self-defense). Tasers are still not generally accepted within most law enforcement groups throughout the world due to their high potential risk for injury or death when used improperly (see Table 2). Despite this limitation, they continue to be widely used by many jurisdictions around the world today because they offer a variety of benefits such as shorter response time when using against large assailants or suspects compared to firearms; incapacitating targets before they can cause serious harm; and providing deterrence against future attacks on officers or citizens

As of 2010, there were 10 businesses in Gloucester City that serve over 50 customers per day. The largest employer in Gloucester City is PNC Bank with over 1,000 employees.
The Gloucester City, New Jersey community was originally founded in 1765 by white settlers from England. The area around present-day Gloucester City was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland and was first called "Nieuw Amsterdam" or "New Amsterdam." The English name, which became Gloucester City, is derived from the town of Cheltenham in Gloucestershire, England. The town's first mayor was Johannes de Witt. In 1812, the town Wasatchy Township merged with Gloucester City to form a new municipality. As a result of this merger, the municipal government changed from a unicameral to a two-tier system with an elected Mayor and Council. In 1902, the township again merged with Gloucester City to form another municipality; this time named Somerset Borough. On February 14, 1966, Somerset Borough merged with Glassboro Township to form another new municipality; this time named Glassboro Township. On July 1, 1998, Glassboro Township and Somerset Borough both merged into one new borough; this time named Gloucester County.
