Gloucester City, New Jersey is a city in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 26,816 at the 2010 census. With Census Bureau figures for 2014 showing a population of 27,787,[1] Gloucester City is the third-largest city in Middlesex County and the fifth-largest city in New Jersey after Newark, Trenton, Camden and Paterson. It is part of the Philadelphia–Camden–Wilmington metropolitan area. The first Europeans to settle in what is now Gloucester City were Dutchmen who came from Paramus via Cranbury and Elizabethtown in 1664. The first English settlers were indentured servants brought over by Captain John Smith from Virginia as he explored the Delaware River Valley during his Expedition of 1707-08. In 1732, Peter Minuit founded Kingston on Burlington Bay as an agricultural settlement with 50 families and began trading with Indians and selling goods to them along the bayfronts of Northampton Township and Somerset County. In 1739, work began on building Fort Cumberland which became permanent upon its completion two years later. For many years Fort Cumberland served as a garrison for British forces stationed along the Delaware River between points beyond its walls - including Trenton (now Princeton), East Brunswick (now Edison), Wildwood (now West Brunswick) and Bridgeport (now Milford). In 1801, when George Washington was inaugurated as President of the United States, he visited Kingston on his way southward through New York State before crossing into Pennsylvania to take office at Mount Vernon. At this time Kingston had a population of 1123 people; it grew rapidly throughout the 19th century due to waves of immigrants - most notably Slovaks who arrived during World War I – settling there seeking jobs in breweries or other businesses related to textiles or agriculture; however some Germans also settled there during that era. Gloucester City, New Jersey is a city in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 11,878 at the 2010 census. The name of the city is derived from English General Sir John Churchill's proclamation that "Gloucester" was to be the new name for Morris County after he was appointed its first Commissioner in 1834. The area around present-day Gloucester City was first settled by European Americans in 1795 and incorporated as a town on December 3, 1814. In 1838, the towns of Westwood and Easton were merged into Gloucester City. On November 3, 1860, the borough of Easton merged with Gloucester City. The Great Fire of Newark destroyed much of downtown Newark on May 5–7th 1863 and damages were extensive throughout the city including to churches and other public buildings. The fire forced many businesses closed but also resulted in an influx of workers to help rebuild what had been lost. On October 12th 1865 a resolution was passed by both branches of the New Jersey Assembly urging President Abraham Lincoln to order federal troops into Newark to put out a blaze that had spread through most of downtown then quickly extinguished itself without causing any loss or damage. In 1868 Essex County became part of New Jersey and Gloucester City became an unincorporated village within it. On July 1st 1895 the boroughs Westwood and Easton merged into Gloucester City along with Rahway (an adjacent township). This merger created a third municipality which would continue until 1955 when Camden took over all three municipalities as well as North Brunswick (from Middlesex Township) forming Camden Township which still includes parts of eastern Morris County today beyond Rahway/Gloucester City limits
