Gloucester City, New Jersey is a city in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,815 at the 2010 census. The unincorporated communities of Westwood and Easton are located in Gloucester City. The English settlement of Gloucester City began as an agricultural village near what is now the town of Easton on the Raritan River in 1683. The township was organized on March 3, 1834 from portions of Cumberland Township. On February 13, 1868, part of Middlesex County was added to Gloucester City. On November 15, 1898 Gloucester City became a borough council seat with a population of 5,965 residents; it remained an unincorporated community until 1984 when it became part of the new city of Camden. In 1903 James J. Lynch purchased 1/4 mile (1 kilometer) east-northeast from what is now Borough Hall Square in what is now downtown for $5 ($ Today's value would be over $100 million). He named his land "Lynch Park." In 1924 he donated land to Rutgers University for a football stadium that would become MetLife Stadium today known as "Rutgers Stadium". The original field goal posts were replaced by 20-foot high metal poles in 1951 after they were damaged by Hurricane Sandy damage which destroyed many homes and businesses along the riverfront section including Lynch's factory across from where MetLife Stadium stands today. A plaque commemorating the occasion reads: “James J. Lynch erected this monument September 25th 1926” It was unveiled by New York Giants owner George Steinbrenner and Governor Rockefeller who also spoke about how important sport had become in New Jersey during their remarks before playing the Newark Bears at Rutgers Stadium that day which ended up being their last game ever played there before moving to Lambeau Field later that year . The municipality was formed on February 3, 1858 from part of Hopewell Township. The area now known as Gloucester City was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century. In 1693 the Dutch built Fort Christiaan at Perth Amboy (now part of Newark) as part of their effort to keep English settlers out of what they saw as their ancestral land. The fort served as an important trading post until it was burned by English forces in 1696. In 1764 John Woolwich erected a small military fort on the site of present-day Gloucester City and named it for himself, after his home town in England where he had been born two years earlier. At that time, most English colonists living in North America were called "Woolwichians". The British Crown granted Woolwichian status toresident aliens who had purchased land or been naturalized citizens within the colonies – such as those who had married into local families – beginning in 1775. By 1800 much of what is now Middlesex County had been explored and claimed by the United States; only 8 miles (13 km) northof present-dayGloucester City remained undeveloped wilderness known as "the back country." On February 3, 1858,County Commissioners voted to form a new municipality based on recommendations from a civic commission organized to review township boundaries that year following an alarmed outcry over increasing pockets of deprivation and lack of services near major cities like Philadelphia and New York City. The new municipality included all but 2/3ofHopewell Township which then became Hunterdon County; GlocesterCity annexed parts of Rahway Township on March 7th 1865 while Westville annexes portions thereof on April 12th 1865 resulting in GloucesterCity having an area larger than any other borough in NJ at that time! The first mayor was George Waddington who served for one year before being replaced by James Laughlin Jr.. Laughlin was reelected without opposition twice before departing office due to ill health after serving one term only - making him Essex County’s first elected Mayor since its creation! Aided by his son James Laughlin III (1924-48), Jr., Town Clerk Thomas Jorgensen served continuously until his retirement effective January 1st 1966; during this time period more than $2 million worthof repairs were made to municipal facilities including resurfacing streets &paving alleyways…..including adding new sidewalks & gutters….amplifying public transportation with buses…building 4 parks totalingareas nearly 5 acres……constructing 7 libraries…..and expanding water systems altogether program cost approximately $27 million concluding with operations costing just under $29 million less than original estimate……..this program resultedin permanent additiontofreetownfunding thrustateappropriation&fundingfromlocalitiesworldwidethereportswestville&Rahway Twp….glocestercitybecameoneofthedirstcitiesinnewjerseywithintheworldwelfarefundamentalprogramme
Gloucester City was a small town in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,000 at the 2000 census. It is located on the northern edge of Union County and is west of Newark. The first white settler in Gloucester City was John Dickinson in 1798. Dickinson built a cabin on what is now known as Dickenson Road and named it after himself. The first post office for Gloucester City was established in 1800 by James Caldwell. The community quickly grew with the influx of settlers and by 1807 had a population of 1,500 residents. In 1812, General John Armstrong's cavalry detachment camped near Gloucester City during their campaign against the British; this event is celebrated each year asArmstrong's Day in Gloucester City. In 1816, Captain John Latham moved his family to Gloucester City from Hackensack and started an inn called the White Hart Inn on North Main Street which became one of the most popular tourist destinations in town. By 1840, there were 10 taverns operating throughout town with an average patronage of $4 per night. Thanks to its strategic location along I-95 and its easy access to markets and transportation options such as trains and buses, flour became one of the town's mainstay businesses early on. In 1898, when Camden Township formed from part of Union County, part of that township went to form what is now Willow Grove Village within Camden Township., while parts still remained within Union County including Gloucester City proper where James Caldwell still resided until his death in 1897.(citation needed) In 1906 when Camden Township merged into Middlesex County , much of GlorchesterCity proper (partially included within Willow Grove Village) transferred with it including most if not all business properties owned or managed by Mr J C Caldwell previous thereto including but not limited to: The White Hart Inn & Brewery (now known as Joe's Pub), Mrs E H Griffiths Bakery (now known as Southern Tier Bakery), Mr J G Kappas Clothing Store(later KNXT TV station), Mr C A Maloney Plumbing & Heating Company(later PNE Corporation). Although some property situated east side Of present dayGloucester city line transfered too like: home built by late George Sperry next door back then occupied by later dealership operated by Jack Diamond from old Riddle Drug store across street from High School across street from Post Office also property belonging to late Alice Nolen prior thereto occupantied formerly by Marion Best who kept house next door thereafter backed then up against wall next door thenceforth used for apartments.)
