Gloucester City is a city in New Jersey, United States. The population was 29,871 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in New Jersey after Newark and Paterson. Gloucester City is located on the southern tip of Monmouth County and is bordered by Atlantic County to the north, Ocean County to the east, and Salem Township to the south. The first Europeans to visit what is now Gloucester City were traders from England who journeyed down Delaware Bay in 1609. In 1777, during the French and Indian War, General John Forbes fought his way through Camden Province across Monmouth County into Salem Township before finally reaching Gloucester City where he set up camp at White's Ferry Landing on October 20th. On November 3rd he issued an order authorizing arms smelting operations starting with lead shot balls which became known as "Forbes bullets." As a result of this event, early settlers named their community "Gloucester" after General Forbes' headquarters located here. In 1812, disputes over land ownership led to a bloody battle between British troops and Native Americans near present-day Neptune Beach while Lieutenant Colonel James Callaghan was leading militia forces against them; ensuing skirmishes resulted in more than 50 dead or wounded on both sides according to one source (and likely much higher totals). The battle also demonstrated how important it was for Britain at that time for its colonial possessions not only militarily but also economically as well - prior to this date there had been no significant commercial activity within what are now Camden and Atlantic Counties due to lack of transportation infrastructure. In 1814 Governor William MacKenzie ordered construction of a road from Trenton through Princeton Junction under the leadership of then-Mayor Simon Cameron (1786-1854). Of particular note are two milestones along this route - Cameron's Bridge over Raritan River (now known as Market Street) and Heckscher Road/Route 9 which served as crossroads until 1915 when Route 9A was built bypassing town entirely and terminating at Atlantic Avenue / Vineland Road just west of town limits today. With development accelerating throughout Monmouth County following World War II, Gloucester City emerged as an increasingly influential community within its borders thanks in part to its location midway between two major metropolitan areas - New York City on one side (twice daily train ride) and Philadelphia on the other hand - making it easy for businesses seeking access thereto whether they be international retailers or locally based manufacturers etc.. However despite growth opportunities many residents felt neglected by both city governments owing largely to few dedicated services offered or resources diverted towards downtown redevelopment instead... This situation began To change beginning around 1990 when Mayor Donald Payne directed city staff & developers working together with NJ Transit/Amtrak creating Albany Station Yards project resulting in new mixed use developments along Amtrak lines including Arundel Marketplace mall across from Union Station BART station totaling 2 million square feet (+ $300 million renovation & expansion awarded initial design approval Jan 2011) Albany Station has since become one of Northjersey's most successful real estate projects ever resulting in long term occupancy by numerous tenants including Sears Holdings Corporation whoseHLD space occupies portions of several store fronts adjacent current day JFK Boulevard South stoplight opposite Amtrak station

Gloucester City is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the borough's population was 9,722. The name of the borough comes from English explorer John Mason Gloucester and his daughter Elizabeth who discovered it on July 22, 1714 while exploring what is now Newark Bay near where Rutgers University is located. The first Europeans to visit what is now Gloucester City were Giovanni da Verrazzano and Matteo Pizzarro in 1524 and 1525 respectively. The first permanent European settlers arrived in 1675 when Captain John Smith found oil shale hereabouts. In 1871, Gloucester City became a part of New Jersey as a result of the amalgamation of Middlesex County with Union County. In 1874-1875, Gloucester City was selected as one of six sites for an experimental electric power plant known as Edison's Crossing. However due to financial problems associated with this project, Edison abandoned plans to build the plant in Gloucester City and moved his headquarters to Scranton, Pennsylvania instead. In 1899-1900 (the year after Edison's death), local entrepreneurs organized "Gloucestershire Day" which coincided with England's centenary celebration of its Restoration following the death of Henry VII (January 14th). This event saw many people from throughout Northeast America attend various events in downtown Gloucester City including picnics on White Sands Beach and ball games at Scott Field Park before returning home that evening by train or streetcar. For years until World War II there was little construction done in or around GloucesterCity since most residents lived elsewhere within the Borough limits or attended school inside the school district boundaries which then included all parts of Middlesex County save for Westwood Township which seceded from Bergen County in 1917 and became its own municipality separate from Middlesex County proper only to merge back into Middlesex Counties again during World War II but without ever officially becoming part of either county once it happened; however all township residents were considered members both times! Afterward development picked up quickly with new housing developments popping up along Route 206 between South Orange Avenue/Route 13A and Cherry Hill Avenue/Route 54B especially around Paramus Boulevard/State Road 717; however some old homes remain standing off-grid today despite being dry & Avoidable due to their proximity to major expressways!
