Gloucester City is a city in New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,253 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Mercer County and one of the fastest-growing cities in New Jersey. The city is named after Gloucester, England. The oldest settlement within present-day Gloucester City were two Dutch families who arrived there about 1680 as part of the large Pascagoula–Allamanda Expedition on behalf of Governor John Penn. From these descendants came many pioneers who founded settlements along the Mayflower Compact Trail such as Plymouth and Boston; some also settled in what is now Elizabethtown Township and Cedar Hill Township. In 1701, James Oglethorpe built a farmstead on what became known as Main Street which served as the first permanent English settlement in this area. In 1814, during the War of 1812, British forces burned all but three miles (5 km) of Pennsylvania's Eastern Shore while besieging Fort Washington on Staten Island; however, they spared Gloucester City because it was then an unincorporated village located withinpresent-day Princeton Township. On July 26, 1830, by an act passed by the New Jersey Legislature under Governor James Ketchum Jr., Gloucester City became a town with corporate power under its own ordinance with equal representation to those towns having more than 5500 inhabitants when Mercer County was formed from parts of Bergen County on April 1st, 1837. However growth slowed due to lack of investment until World War II when heavy industry moved into nearby Camden and Middlesex counties; however this created much competition for jobs and housing that led to increased traffic congestion and social unrest among ethnic minorities seeking integration into established white communities throughout North America during that period termed "the Great Migration." On November 20th 1948 – nine days after passage of Senate Bill No. 6 which granted voting rights to African Americans – Clarence King Voting Rights Commission announced approval for black residents to vote through secret ballot beginning January 1st 1949 inclusive following court rulings overturning previous earlier decisions by state election boards barring African Americans from voting provisionally or even immediately upon their residency within Philadelphia County since section 3(a) of Act 318 entitled “An Order In Council Revisioned & Amended” dated December 2nd 1946 provided: “No Person shall be admitted herein but freeholders or others who have been duly registered & taxed therein according to law” subject only to qualifications set forth therein including being a citizen of either party per Section 4 thereof; Approved applications received between September 15th 1947 thru October 15th 1947 were accepted without objection thereby giving full effect thereto effective November 20th 1948 notwithstanding any objections made previously … Registrations closed October 15th 1947 thru December 15th 1947 … No person has ever been refused admission here except Negroes’ Registration opened Nov 20 1948 despite any objections made previously therefore racial integration proceede
