The first European settlement in what is now Gloucester City was by Captain John Smith on December 14, 1714 when he claimed land from the Lenape Native Americans east of Cape May Point on Long Island Sound. On January 7, 1715, Smith and his men erected a small cabin on what is now North Park Drive. They named it "New Castle" after their new home at New Castle Court House in Delaware County (now called Wilmington). In 1718 the British burned down Fort George near what is now downtownGloucester City while they were making their way through the area with forces under General Howe to invade America's Thirteen Colonies. On April 16, 1776 during the American Revolution when Massachusetts Governor Thomas Hutchinson asked for an army to attack Princeton but did not receive adequate support from New York because of its political rivalry with Pennsylvania then under British rule - Hutchinson instead sent messengers to Philadelphia requesting aide against Boston's forces besieging Trenton which had recently been captured by General Howe outside of Princeton - giving rise to rumors that Philadelphia would not provide help as long as its own citizens were not involved in hostilities against Bostonians. This caused much consternation within Philadelphia as well as throughout America since this violated longstanding precedents setting forth that cities likePhiladelphia should furnish military assistance only when requested by their respective states or provinces; such requests were made without fail before every major conflict between two sides in North America during this period- exceptions being King George's War (1755-1767) and King George's Rebellion (1775-1781). Gloucester City was founded in 1753 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte. The first settler, Joseph Houghtaling, arrived in 1755 and started to build a cabin nearby on the present site of the city. In 1814, the United States Congress chartered Gloucester City as a town, and the first mayor was elected in that year. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century, with construction of public buildings such as a courthouse and state capitol. By 1870, Gloucester City had a population of over 1,000 people. However, during World War II (1939-1945), Gloucester City experienced significant damage from Allied bombing raids. As a result of these bombings, many homes were destroyed or damaged and the population decreased significantly; however, since then it has rebound slightly and today has an estimated population of around 15 hundred people.
