Gloucester City is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 12,715 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Trenton, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlement in what is now Gloucester City was made by Peter Minuit and his family on December 1, 1676 as a trading post on the Raritan River. The town was founded by General James Monmouth and his regiment of horse soldiers on October 16, 1701 as an English colony under the name of "New Brunswick". On November 3rd of that year, Monmouth submitted to France's claim to all North America east of the Great Lakes - this included present-day Gloucester City - becoming its vassal king. 2 weeks later (November 10th), with British troops marching into New York City and Quebec being taken over by France, Monmouth became Head Quarters for British forces in North America at Boston where he installed George Washington as Commander in Chief. On December 15th, 1701 – only days after Monmouth submitted to French rule – Massachusetts Governor John Hancock declared that Gloucester City had become a part of New Jersey and it became incorporated as a township on February 22nd of that year with 11 residents; one vote more than Trenton which had been organized two days earlier (February 21st). In 1846 whenNJ formed from parts of New York and Pennsylvania it took control of Gloucester City's borough seat also making it part of Newark but much like Trenton it slowly lost population until out populations reached around 20K people about 1990s 2000s when growth resumed again reaching 30K people today early 2020s according to Census data

Gloucester City was founded on September 3, 1788 by Captain John Woolridge and his men who were seeking refuge from the violence of the American Revolution. The town's first settler, George Washington, was born in nearby Princeton. The town grew rapidly during the early 1800s due to its strategic location at the junction of several wagon roads and its position as a port for goods traveling between New York and Philadelphia. In 1812, Gloucester City became part of Middlesex County. In 1837, Gloucester City voters passed a resolution declaring themselves an independent city. This decision led to skirmishes with the county government which continued until 1840 when Gloucester City obtained full municipal status within Middlesex County. During World War II, Gloucester City played a critical role in the war effort by providing munitions production capacity for allied forces. After the war ended, many of the city's residents moved out or left to find new opportunities in post-war America. However, some residents returned during and after the Restoration period which began in 1969 and continued until 1995 when it was decided that Gloucester City would become a borough restoration program community under then-Mayor Joseph Aiello's administration. Since becoming a borough restoration program community under Mayor Aiello's administration, many changes have been made to downtown core including installation of new lighting and streetlights as well as reconstruction of infrastructure such as sidewalks and gutters along Broadway Street.. Today, much of what once constituted downtown has been preserved as part of "Old Town" - one of two official districts inside Borough Hall - while newer areas have been renovated into mixed-use developments featuring professional office space and residential units.
Gloucester City is a borough in New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 8,873. It is part of the Camden County municipality.
