His handgun is also preserved at the historical museum. In 1851, George Aiken became the first person to buy a rifle in Gloucester City. He used it for hunting purposes rather than defending himself against attackers. Aiken's rifle is also preserved at the historical museum. By 1870, all of Gloucester City had become legally required by law to Carry Firearms Openly!
Gloucester City is a city in New Jersey, United States. The population was 30,797 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Gloucester County. The city was founded by English colonists in 1764 as part of the Morristown Plantation on the banks of the Delaware River. In 1834, it became a town and then an incorporated village before becoming a city on July 1, 1960. The current mayor is Joseph J. Bruno and the City Council has six members with three seats up for election every two years. Gloucester City is located at . It has a total area of , making it the smallest municipality in New Jersey and one of only five cities in New York State that does not have a river running through its downtown core (the others are Yonkers, Syracuse, Buffalo, and Rochester). The nearest other municipalities are Paterson to the east and Trenton to the west. The Census Bureau estimated that as of 2010 there were 30,797 people living in Gloucester City proper (including all of South Street), 511 households out of which 28% had children under age 18 living with them, 54% were married couples living together, 8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 43% were non-families. The first post office called "Gloucester" was established on December 12th, 1814 by Captain John Smith alias Groombridge with mail delivered by boat upriver until then It is interesting to note that Captain John Smith had also been named after General James Jackson who had earlier been killed at Battle of Hatteras Island off Virginia where British forces under Cornwallis were attacking American forces under George Washington In 1820 Samuel Hubbard erected a millrace near what is now Market Street in what is now downtown Glocester Township Hubbard’s millstream powered one hand sawmill which he commenced operations in 1830 glocester@aol
Gloucester City was established in 1764 as a part of the Monmouth County, New Jersey area. The first settler in the town was John Tryon. The town was renamed to Gloucester in 1838 and became an incorporated municipality in 1859. In 1920, Gloucester City annexed the neighboring towns of West Deptford and East Deptford. In 1951, Gloucester City became a part of the new Camden Township when Camden, New Jersey was created from portions of Monmouth and Burlington Counties.
