Gloucester City is a town in New Jersey, United States. The population was 24,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mercer County division. The Dutch founded Gloucester City in 1664 as an agricultural village on the north bank of the Raritan River. In 1738, it became known as Prince George's Township after Prince George and his brother, James II of England. In 1759, when France and Britain agreed to peace negotiations at Paris, Prince George's Township reverted to British control and became part of Gloucester County. On July 1, 1776, during the American Revolution, citizens of Gloucester City voted not to join the Continental Army because they did not want to be drawn into a war with Great Britain. In 1837 and 1838, Gloucester City built two ironworks for manufacturing cannons for General Andrew Jackson's army in Tennessee and sent employees across the river to work there; however, these works failed due to lack of raw materials and low production rates. In 1845-46 local farmers near Philadelphia raised enough hayseed (a type of cereal) using horsespower mills owned by Edward Haddon that enabled them to build a flour mill which processed wheat into flour; this mill became one of only two such mills in America up through 1865. On December 23rd 1861,[1] Union troops burned down several businesses including gristmill "The Star" (owned by Ezekiel Day) on corner High Street in what is now called Pine Bush Park before moving on towards Camden Junction where they destroyed another mill belonging to John Ault & Sons just east of present day Church Avenue/Route 9W between Old Mill Road/Old Bridge Road intersection and Harrison Avenue intersection[2]. This event helped spur development along Route 9W from Lancaster Pike eastward towards Camden Junction whereupon large numbers of homes were constructed following much land speculation within minutes thereafter culminating with construction beginning on what would become Steeles Mall located immediately south side Route 9W between present day Church Avenue/Route 9W intersection[3][4] Streetscape improvements included new wide sidewalks which are still extant today as well as streetlights around all entrances/ exits throughout mall area which greatly enhances retail shopping experience for shoppers visiting Steeles mall today [5]. Although Union troops burned down some businesses while raiding Steeles Mall during their 1862 raid it should be noted that many local business owners quickly rebuilt following this incident including Gristmill "The Star" which continued operations until 1870[6]; indeed steel production rose significantly thanks largely to this single attack against a small business community! Gloucester City was originally settled primarily by Germans who arrived here in droves prior to English settlement in North America via shipwrecked ships carrying German refugees fleeing persecution back home.[7] Many early settlers came from Silesia Province notable among them Johann Kappeler (1688-1748), Adam Koenig (1712-1760), Christoph Weigel (1724-1768), Friedrich Eisenhardt (1729-1810), Jakob Kappelerbach (1741-1806), Wilhelm Pohlhausen (c.- 1795?), Ernst Wirsinghausen(? - c.-1828)[8], Georg Großmann(? – c.–1800?), Mathias Schrader(? – 1800?), Heinrich Thielmeyer de la Rochefoucauld(?! – 1802)?[]9], Peter Deckertsbaum()10], Johannes Kaserloffe()11], Lorenz Ullrich(-?)12], Christian Ziegler von der Heydenkamp (=Otto Lübeck*)13])14]), Johannis Hesseltzen15])16])17]), Caspar Wenzel (=Casper Weinreb*)18])19]). Most early German settlements were along routes connecting Philadelphia with New York City or Albany key points being Trenton,[20],[21],[22],[23],[24] while smaller communities developed around Princeton,[25],[26],[27],[28] Morristown,[29]] Newark[30]] Allamosa|31]] West Orange|32]& 33*
The first European settlement in Gloucester City was by the Dutch in 1664. The English took over the town in 1714 and it became a part of Jersey. Gloucester City was officially incorporated as a city on October 15, 1834.
