Gloucester City (population: 21,792) is a city located in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 24,898. The name of the town that was amalgamated with Gloucester City in 1885 is still used as an ethnic term by some residents. The first European settler in what is now Gloucester City was Nicholas Vail who arrived on October 9th, 1701 and built a cabin on a hilltop overlooking the mouth of Raritan River. In 1702 John Doane established himself at what is now Doane's Campground and began to cultivate land along the riverbank. In 1768 Benjamin Weston moved from Philadelphia to establish himself at what is now Weston's Landing on Raritan Bayou. On September 14th, 1775 Captain John Stevens landed his squadron of three ships at what is now Gloucester City and named it after King George III following his victory over French forces at Saratoga Springs. In 1825 James Purdy founded Purdy's Ferry which connected Newark and Camden Harbour. This ferry became very important during the early days of railroads when goods had to be transported long distances between settlements or between different ports on Long Island Sound. The first railroad line reached Gloucester City in 1849 when the Camden and Amboy Railroad opened up new territory south of Bound Brook including present-day East Brunswick Township and parts of Middlesex County including Elizabethtown Township and Uniondale Township. By 1870 there were over 50 businesses operating in town including several woolen mills as well as flourmills, breweries, tanneries and farms producing hay, oats, potatoes etc.. Gloucester City experienced significant growth during World War II due to its status as one of six U.S., Allied airfields utilized by RAF Bomber Command for attacks against Nazi Germany across occupied Europe). A group of men including Christopher “Kit” Rice decided to name their new settlement after Prince Charles Augustus who had come down from Scotland in support of the war effort against Great Britain. The town began trading goods with other settlements along the Susquehanna River throughout summertime before finally settling down into a permanent community In 1764 due to open land grants from Lord Howe he received following his victory over British forces at Saratoga Springs in September 1763 Prince Charles Augustus resided at various places throughout North America prior to his arrival in Philadelphia where he met General George Washington during their battle at Princeton on July 9th 1775 On April 12th1764 Prince Charles Augustus made his maiden trip across the Delaware River as part of Admiral John Stroud's squadron commanded by Commodore Thomas Graves . On this day also Captain Samuel French led a party consisting of six men under Major James Fenimore Cooper through thickets nearpresent-day Dunellen and attacked two small villages situated near Swedesboro Creek called Newtown and Raritan Valley These attacks were retaliation for recent raids by British forces upon our frontier communities east of Trenton After landing hereabouts they continued their march northwestward passing through present day Princeton then downstream past present-day Camden before finally reaching Newark where they refreshed themselves at King's Tavern before continuing their journey northeastward passed through Bound Brook before arriving at Glorietta Ville on April 16th while General Washington pursued British forces toward Albany This event helped solidify Congress' resolve not To let Great Britain win any more Battle's without taking substantial losses within our borders
Gloucester City was a small, rural community in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The town was founded on November 3, 1837 by landfill operators from Ramsey and Ocean Counties who were seeking to avoid the high taxes levied by Passaic County. The name of the town is derived from the English word "glebe" meaning farmstead or estate. The first post office in Gloucester City was established on December 10, 1838. By 1860, Gloucester City had a population of just over 100 people. In 1865, the first public school opened in Gloucester City. In 1870, Gloucester City became part of Bergen County; however, it retained its own government until 1912 when it become part of Union Township. On May 1, 1922, Union Township merged with Paramus Township; however, Paramus retains its own government as an incorporated municipality today. Gloucester City has been home to numerous businesses and companies over the years including ComcastSpectrum and Lennar Home Services among others. It also has several churches which continue to play an important role in the community life - St John's Episcopal Church (founded in 1840), First Baptist Church (founded in 1852), and Christ Our King Catholic Parish (founded in 1888).
