Gloucester City is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The community was founded on December 12, 1764 by Captain John Thomson and his wife Betsy Livingston and was named for Sir George Carteret, 2nd Baronet (1685-1747), who had fought in the American Revolution. In 1881, Gloucester City became a borough from which it has since been removed as a municipality. The first mayor of Gloucester City was James Fenton (1868-1901). The Borough of Gloucester City was dissolved on April 14th, 1974 and its residents were incorporated into the new township of Chesterfield Township. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township had a total area of , all of it land. As of the census[10] of 2000, there were 7,521 people,[11] 4,812 households,[12] 3,572 families residing in the township;the population density was 1,724/km² (4,608/mi²). There were 589 housing units at an average density of 501/km² (1,722/mi²). The racial makeup of the township was 97% White; 0% Black or African American; 1% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; 0% from other races; and 2% from two or more races. Gloucester City was founded in 1764 as a small trading post on the Monmouth River. At first, it was known as "New Brunswick" because of its similarity to that town in New Jersey. The name change came about because of the war with Great Britain. In 1768, the British burned down the old fort and renamed Gloucester City "New Brunswick." The new town quickly became a thriving commercial center and grew into a large city by 1800. The city's economy changed dramatically during the 19th century. First, linen exports started to boom due to burgeoning trade between Europe and America. Then, manufacturing began to take off due to increased demand for goods exported from America by European countries. With these two industries booming, wages soared and many people moved into Gloucester City from surrounding villages. The city experienced another period of growth during World War II when important military installations were built here such as Naval Air Station North Island and Army Post Office West Point. After the war, however, economicstadys went through a downturn which led to many residents moving away or leaving for other opportunities in postwar America. Today, much of what once made up the downtown core of Gloucester City is now vacant or used for storage purposes. However, there are still some remnants of this historic community remaining such as The Olde Towne Brewery which tours open daily at 4pm for interested visitors!
The Gloucester City area was first settled by Dutch colonists in the early 17th century. The town of Gloucester was founded on the site of modern-day Gloucester City on February 14, 1683, and became an official community under English rule in 1702. In 1812, the United States acquired control of New Jersey from Great Britain following their war for independence. The state government moved to Newark and the area surrounding it became part of Middlesex County. In 1828, a portion of what is now Gloucester City territory were added to Union County and remain there today. The city was incorporated as a municipality on May 1, 1898. It residents voted to become a city again on November 3rd, 1978.
