Gloucester City, New Jersey is a city in and the county seat of Gloucester County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 26,859 at the 2000 census. The history of Gloucester City begins with its founding as a small trading post on May 11, 1764 by Captain John Smith and his party from Portsmouth, England. The post was abandoned after only six weeks because of Native American attacks. On December 25, 1821, General James K. Polk appointed George Washington as governor of New Jersey to take up the position vacated by Commodore John Stevens when he resigned due to illness. In 1824 Governor Washington recommended that Gloucester City be granted incorporation as a borough under state law; it was not until 1829 that this request was approved by the NJ Legislature. On February 6, 1830 Borough President Amos Kendall announced that all land east of Market Street had been bought for $2 per acre (the first such purchase in what would become Gloucester City). This purchase set off a rapid expansion within what became known as "The Strip" – an area extending along Broad Street from Market Square to South Park Avenue – which bordered on Philadelphia but didn’t include that city proper. In 1835–36 there were three documented Indian raids on the town: one led by Samuel Tilden on October 16 and 17; another by David Irvine on November 1; and still another by Nathan Phillipson on December 10th/11th (the last Raid). These incidents left many residents scared for their safety and led to calls for more security around town center strongholds like Market Square or South Park Avenue where gunmen could potentially attack any unguarded civilians without WARNING them first In 1840 Treasurer Jno Higginson reported stealing $5 worth of goods from local merchants near Water Tower Road while they were transporting goods down Ridge Road during early morning hours just before Christmas Eve carrying enough supplies for 5 families) As part of efforts to improve public safety Mayor James Fenton unveiled plans For Arastead Wall which included hiring two privates armed with pistols who would roam through neighborhoods warning people about impending banditry
