Glen Rock is a community located in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 11,856 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Paterson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Glen Rock were Dutch colonists who established a trading post there in 1664. The area was originally named "Haines Township" after General Nicholas Haines, commanding general of the English forces that evacuated New Netherland after the Battle of Saratoga in 1777. When Morristown and other settlements were established in Hunterdon County, including Glen Rock, it became part of Morristown. In 1812, General James Knoppers moved his artillery and infantry troops from Trenton to form the 1st US Volunteer Infantry Regiment under Major General Irvin McDowell to repel an invasion by Mexico led by Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. On October 12, 1812, during the Third Battle of Monmouth Court House (also known as Monmouth Heights), American troops commanded by Knoppers overran Mexican positions on what is now Glen Rock Heights and stormed into town; continuing their attack up Market Street until they reached North Avenue where they stopped for dinner before returning to Fort Mercer near Princeton In 1814-15 two more battles took place on what are now site of Glen Rock: Battle of White Sands and Battle of Aspinwall Hill On February 28th 1865 Union Major General Ulysses S. Grant's force attacked Confederate Major General Averill Harcourt's army at Red Bank’s Bridge over Passaic River in present-day Harrisonburg Township southeast of Parsippany just north of Interstate 95 concurrent with battle fought between Union Brigadier Generals George Armstrong Custer and Nathaniel Pendergast Aftermath: At least 36 men died; some sources say 100-200 More than 3 times as many women died as men while serving within Confederate military units

Glen Rock is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 12,619 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and (0.9%) is water. The town was named after Forbes Glen Rock, an affluent neighborhood in Edinburgh, Scotland. The first settler in what would become Glen Rock was John Forbes who arrived in 1784 with his family from Scotland. In 1814, he and his brother-in-law James Kirkland built a sawmill on the banks of the Passaic River near present-day Easton Township and began producing lumber for local residents and exporting to other countries. By 1828, their mill had been replaced by another one and they moved to their current site on White Street (now called Main Street) about two miles west of where they started out. In 1848, John Forbes Jr., son of John Forbes Sr., erected a gristmill on White Street that still stands today as one of Morris County's most important businesses according to some sources - it processed wheat until 1954 when it became known as the Star Mills Corporation due to its affiliation with Star Paper Company which was founded by David Hirschschildt in 1923). In 1903, Citizens' Bank opened along Main Street; it remains one of Morris County's oldest commercial institutions today. Residents also founded several small schools including Park Elementary School (1892), Highland Heights School (1912), Glen Rock High School (1935), and Mountain View Elementary School (1963). Many prominent citizens were associated with this early community such as Govan Macdonald who served as superintendent of education from 1889 until 1897; Drusilla Vanderbilt Singer Ballou who served as first female mayor from 1940 until her death in 1945; George Washington Carver Jr.; Robert Moses who helped develop transportation within Morris County during World War II; Irvington Mayor Joseph Jaffe who presided over Jersey City during much post-war redevelopment; Edwin Kilgore Weaver whose library opened at Main Street & Greenfield Avenue in 1922 - today considered an historic landmark; Jay Gould - father of Jay Gotti - who cofounded Ameriprise Financial Corporation with his brother Abraham Bassett Glickman in 1959 which became one of America's largest financial services companies . After years of decline due to various factors such as demographics/economic changes throughout New Jersey etc., industry consolidation and layoffs beginning around 1990 resulted in downtownGlen Rock losing nearly all its business activity between 1995-2005 while simultaneously causing reduced populations along both streets making retail properties more valuable than ever before becoming available again Downtown since 2005 providing jobs for locals once again although there are no plans yet for any development or new housing projects downtown other than infrastructure work currently taking place . There have been recent efforts made by developers interested either locally or nationally to revive downtownGlen rock but so far these have not materialized into anything significant having included replacing some streetlights with LED’s however this project still has many miles left before it could be completed
Glen Rock was settled in 1755 by the Potters and their families. The town was originally called Indian Rocks, but was renamed Glen Rock in 1812 after General James Wilkinson, 1st Baron Dunmore of Glenrock Castle. The town became a township in 1868, and a borough in 1903. The borough government dissolved on July 1, 2013, and the town became an unincorporated community again.
