Glen Rock is a small town located in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia–Wilmington–Havanna Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1799 and named for John Glen (1722-1807), an Ulster colonel who had fought against George Washington in the American Revolution. The first settler was James O'Donnell, who lived on what is now Springvale Avenue. On October 15, 1814, the town received its charter from Governor Andrew Hamilton and became a borough under the governance of a board of commissioners. On January 1, 1825 it was renamed Glen Rock after Major General John Pemberton's successful invasion of Canada which ended with his victory at Yorktown Heights. In 1870, Glen Rock became one of 10 townships within Mercer County to be formed when it was divided into three districts; those including Hackensack and Passaic were redesignated as Boroughs on November 3rd that year while those including Glen Rock remained as Townships until 1898 when they too were redesignated as Boroughs. Glen Rock's rich history can be seen through its many landmarks such as Ford's Theater (now known as the Barnes Theatre), Heywood Baptist Church and Parkhurst Cemetery which are all still in use today. Additionally, there are also several educational institutions located in town including Seton Hall University and Rutgers University – Camden which has their main campus located in nearby Paramus while Hoboken University has its main campus located near Elizabethtown Heights outside of GlensRock proper.
