Glen Rock is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,906 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The name " Glen Rock" comes from a location in Scotland called "Glen Ross". A post office was established at this location on October 15, 1824, and remained in operation until February 16, 1828. The present borough was formed from portions of two other municipalities on April 3, 1909: South Hackensack Township (the easternmost portion) and North Hackensack Township (the westernmost). In 1795 the Susquehanna River valley became available for settlement after passage of the Adams-Onion Act which granted land to Revolutionary War veterans as punishment for their support of British rule. George Washington's brother-in-law John Derry founded Derryville Farm on what is now Glen Rock Avenue in 1796. In 1800 David Marks carried out an survey that found three square miles (6 km²) of land comprising today's Borough containing interest rate payers' offices and other public buildings along the Susquehanna River Valley Road between Mount Carmel and Hazlet Streets; it was annexed byNorth Hackensack Township on April 3, 1909. Glen Rock was founded on November 4, 1784 by Scots-Irish settlers from County Donegal. The original name for the town was "Rocky Hill". The first post office in Glen Rock opened on October 15, 1851. In 1875, the borough of Rocky Hill merged with Deptford to form Glen Rock Borough. On May 1, 1908, the borough of Deptford merged with Rocky Hill Borough to form Glen Rock Township. On January 1, 1921, the township of Glenrock Township was disbanded and its land became part of Bergen County. The current name for Glenrock is an anglicized version of "Glen Rocks". The townships and villages within Glenrock Township were formed based on assessments made during township meetings held between 1875 and 1912. During that time period, taxes were levied upon farmlands and homes in addition to businesses and schools within those townships; these assessments are still collected today by local government officials as part of municipal services rendered to residents within their jurisdictions. In 1916 - 1918 there was a large amount of upheaval in World War I due to trench warfare across Europe which created many shortages in goods that couldn't be shipped overland such as ammunition so cafés became popular places where soldiers could stop for food while they fought or restocked their supplies inside France(the Café de la Gare). This type of business also flourished during World War I because people would bring back food they had eaten while fighting overseas as well as selling it at local stores once hostilities wound down. This led to another term given to this specific type of business: "Garrison Coffee" because if you went into any major city during wartime there would be soldiers stationed near every coffee shop (which served not only soldiers but also civilians) providing caffeine breaks from all that combat.)
