It is part of the Newark–Trenton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Glen Rock were Dutch settlers who named it "Houten" (meaning "hollow"). The area now known as Glen Rock was part of Middlesex County until 1814 when it became Essex County due to the creation of that county by an act of Congress. There are two theories about why Glenn Rock became so called: One suggests that some early residents took their name from a rock outcropping near by, while others believe they named the place after a beautiful waterfall which they saw from their homes on the high ground overlooking the river valley. In either case, GlennRock soon became one of the most popular tourist destinations in Essex County and remains so today. GlennRock's rich history begins with its incorporation as a township on March 17, 1911. At that time, there were just over 4,000 people living in what is now Glenrock Township; today’s population tops 6,000! With such growth came increased development and infrastructure needs – including an original water tower still standing to this day! And those needs never stopped raining down on communities like Glenrock since then! Glen Rock is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Glen Rock were Native Americans who hunted and collected game on the high ground around present-day Glen Rocks Park. Christopher Columbus passed through this area on his way to India in 1492, and he may have been acquainted with these people because they had an elaborate system of tracking deer that used a rock as a divider. In 1764, George Washington's forces occupied Fort Cumberland while they fought the French and their Indian allies during the Seven Years' War. The British built Fort Cumberland near present-day Glen Rock Park to protect this strategic site from enemy attack. When American forces invaded Canada in 1812, they abandoned Fort Cumberland and replaced it with Fort Washington at Trenton Junction (now East Orange). In 1814, President James K. Polk built Fort Strong at Point Pleasant after Commodore John Rodgers’s successful attempt to acquire control of Lake Superior for the United States by storming its mouth using HMS "Warrior" and HMS "Plymouth". The fort served as a point of contact between U.S./Canadian troops conducting operations against Native Americans along Lakes Michigan and Erie as well as providing military supplies for Ulysses S. Grant’s Expedition against Cheyenne River Sioux in 1863-1864; however, it was not manned until 1865 due to lack of funds following the Civil War. In 1881, construction began on Glen Rock High School which opened its doors in September of that year.[4] The school crest features two mountains: One representing strength or power while another represents growth or progressiveness; together these symbolize America's journey from humble beginnings to global prominence over many centuries since independence was achieved[5]. With more than 1,600 students grades 9-12,[6], today's students attend one of New Jersey's most prestigious schools[7]. Glen Rock has always been an agricultural town with agriculture being its mainstay economic activity up until recent times when manufacturing became more prevalent throughout New Jersey due to interstate trade opportunities brought about by globalization etc., However much like others throughout Great Britain/Europe during this time period there were also waves of immigrants coming here seeking work opportunities starting with Huguenots fleeing France during Protestant Reformation while others started arriving via boatloads disembarking from Holland’s Zeebrugge shipyard which lay just south of where GlenRock now stands
