Glassboro was founded on July 4, 1777 by colonists from England and named for Nicholas-Jacques Glass (1712–1778), an officer in the French and Indian War and commander of Fort Cumberland. The first glassblowing shop in New Jersey opened its doors in 1824 in what is now the town center of Glassboro. In 1875, James Wessels purchased a farm at present-day North Street and Park Avenue inGlassboro Township to breed chickens for sale to farmers throughout southern New Jersey. By 1899, Wessels had developed a small hat factory on his property that became known as "Wessels Hat Factory". The company produced hats for many Northeastern United States presidents such as Ulysses S. Grant and Rutherford B Hayes before it merged with two other hatmakers to form American Hat Incorporated in 1916. The largest customer during this time was Democratic National Committee who ordered more than two million hats from American Hat during Woodrow Wilson's presidential campaign of 1912 American Hat continued producing hats until 1986 when it merged with Dillard's department store chain to become Dillard's HomeStore Corporation
