Glassboro, New Jersey is a small town located in Union County, New Jersey. The population was 9,571 at the 2010 census. Glassboro is part of the Newark-based Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first mention of Glassboro comes from William Penn in his "Journal of a Tour through America" (1688). In it he refers to the town as 'Glebe' and says that its farmers produce corn, beans, rabbits and beaver dams. By 1812 Glassboro had a post office and two stores. The first store was built by Joshua Green who operated it for three years before moving to Sellersville. By 1814 there were nine stores in Glassboro with a population of over 100 people. In 1824 John Fenton opened a store in what is now known as downtown Glassboro which became one of the most successful businesses in town. Fenton's store sold goods such as groceries, textiles, hardware and fine tools to consumers throughout much of centralNew Jersey including Plainfield and Paterson. He also manufactured goods such as glassware and watch cases out of local white oak logs. After John Fenton's death his son James Fenton took over his business but within six months sought bankruptcy protection because he could not compete with larger retailers like John Dorman or Samuel Morse & Sons who had moved into the area since 1840. James Fenton reopened his store in 1830 under the name Gadsden Furniture Company yet again failing to profitability due to competition from larger companies like Mr Kappeler’s Store on Market Street south adjacent to Rutgers University which began selling pianos in 1827 and soon became423rd largest retailer in America with $1 million sales annually when it closed its doors in 1865 after many years at 417th place behind Sears Roebuck & Co.). An Act passed by the General Assembly on November 15th1828 allowed for four resident ministers – named Reverends George Read (Augusta), Edward Everett (March), Timothy Dwight (January)and Nicholas Proctor (May) –to open schools throughout sections 3, 4& 5of Princeton Township; they received an appropriation from Chancellor Robert Morris for £2O0 each year until 1800/$10O per capita annual income limit was reached then education would be funded by assessments levied on property owners within their boundaries subject to future appropriations by Court order or special act approved by both Houses thereof…this Act served notice that all children between age 7½months old upwards must attend public Schools whereupon parents were empowered either directly or through their representatives licensed private Schoolmasters residing therein without loss of exemption granted hitherto; thereafter any individual parent may choose either Public School or Private School provided he has resided within Provided District for six Months previous To schooling Time thereby further securing common educational opportunities among all classes…it should be noted however that no child attending school shall hereafter be compelled beyond this prescribed period without parental consent having been obtained previously ;from this time forward every citizen sixteen years or older must have some means support himself including attendance at public Schools…. Glassboro is located on the southern border of the county and is bordered by Morris Township to the north and east, Glassboro Borough to the south and west, and township of Union to the northwest. It lies in "The Mountain" section of Mercer County. The first record of glass making in Glassboro comes from 1727 when John Campbell made some glasses there for his brother-in-law. By 1775, glass had been replaced by pottery as a popular medium for manufacturing products such as buttons and figurines. In 1814 Nicholas Lyon started making cheese from milk that he brought from his dairy farm in Wildersville. The word "glass" came into use here around this time as people were using more recycled materials to make new products like windows than with traditional methods such as burning lime ortanum (a natural resin) to produce a smooth surface for glass production. In 1845 James Waddell opened an ice cream stand in what is now known as Central Park which became one of NJ's most successful businesses until it closed its doors in 1951 due to economic troubles described later by author David McCullough: "Waddell Astrophycade had become proverbial throughout America because no matter how many times you visited it – whether on market days or during carnival season - you never got tired of watching children shove wads of cash through revolving doores into a churning cream puddle." The Panic of 1907 led to increased business competition which caused Waddell'siconoclastic stand owner James Fenton Jr., Sr., who ran another rival ice cream stand nearby on Market Street, also called Astrophycade; both businesses closed their doors within weeks due largely to high prices charged for goods unavailable elsewhere during that desperate time period." However local historian Forrest Geduld has written about an even earlier incarnation of Astrophycade which may have existed prior thereto thanks to Orson Welles' visit thereto during Mercury Rising TOUR/1937:"It was not long after Orson Welles' visit that he approached JF Henderson about starting an ice cream store near where he was then working at Edison Laboratories...Henderson agreed but asked Welles if he wanted something special added - 'an observatory cone', well aware that Orson could produce any observational object that pleased him.'" According To Geduld: "'An observatory cone'? He must have found it quite unique! I think we might have gotten one!'" And so began NJ's very own Astrophylactic Ice Cream Stand!"
