Glassboro, New Jersey is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 11,898 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Monmouth County and is part of the Camden–Newark metropolitan area. Glassboro's ZIP code is 07302. The first Europeans to visit what is now Glassboro were Dutch colonists who set up a fur trading post there in 1664. In 1702, Dunmore's War led to the American Revolution; British forces burned down the Dutch post and looted goods that had been stored there. The local gunsmith, Silvester Willoughby, rebuilt it as a small village named after himself, Glassboro Manor (later renamed Willoughby Township). In 1834, John D. Rockefeller acquired 8 miles (13 km) of railroad line from Philadelphia to Brunswick and founded the Delaware River Railroad Company at present-day Bound Brook Junction in Glassboro Township; he called it the "Rockefeller Railway". That same year settlers began moving into Glassboro from throughout Monmouth County and soon established farms hereabouts including one by Cornelius Vanderbilt II on what are now Roosevelt Road and McCarter Highway. Between 1835 and 1850 more than 200 families erected homes around what became known as "The Village." On November 4th of each year since 1876 residents have gathered at Market Square for Auld Lang Syne ("Old Time Christmas"). Homeowners celebrate with tradeshows on their back yards while merchants sell traditional colonial-era items such as eggs and candy cane products made from tree sap and branches hand-crafted by local artisans during that time period.
