Glassboro is located on the Delaware River between Camden and Paterson and north of Newark. The name Glassboro comes from English settlers who named it for John Glass (1645-1712), son of John Glasse (1593-1658). They arrived in 1681 as part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. glassstown meaning "place where glass is made" was given to the town by its founders in 1868 based on mineralogical data collected from a local quarry. The first post office opened in 1876. On July 6, 1777, during the American Revolutionary War, General George Washington's army burned down part of what is now downtown Glassboro after an expedition against British forces had failed to take it by nightfall. The Battle of Glassboro took place on July 9 nearby where Fort Mercer now stands. In 1794–95, Congress granted township status to what are now parts of Glassboro and South Orange Township; these became effective November 1, 1794 when all townsships were merged into Hunterdon County under the new system known as “divisional organization” which followed Germanic settlement patterns more closely than English ones. Glassboro's history dates back to 1795 when wealthy Quaker John Smith purchased land in what is now Glassboro Township from the Lenape Indians. He named his new township after George Washington's home state of Virginia. John Smith's son, James Smith, donated land to the town in 1829 for use as a public square. The first school in Glassboro opened in 1835 and was called "The School House" because it was the only building on the original site that still stands today. In 1868, Glassboro became one of thirteen townships within Philadelphia County and was renamed after Johnstown, Pennsylvania which had recently become an independent city. In 1916, during World War I, glass products manufacturers produced munitions at three sites near Glassboro: one at High Bridge Arsenal; another at Millville Arsenal; and another at White Sands Ammunition Plant. Production stopped during World War II but resumed after the war due to increased demand from both military and civilian customers. In 1949, Glassboro merged with nearby Bethel Park to form a single municipality with a population of 15,000 people. Today, glass products remain an important part of local economy with production continuing at two other sites: One located in Old Forge Township (near Vineland) and another near Chesterfield Township (just west of Glassboro).glassborough-newjersey
