Glassboro is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 27,711. The town was founded by English colonists in 1764 and incorporated as a municipality on November 5, 1874. Glassboro is located on the south side of the Delaware River at (40.860901,-75.383759). The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Glassboro were the Dutch in 1624 and again in 1678. They built Fort Nassau on the site of today's Borough Hall and called it "Nassau" because they had just acquired from Spain this land east of Newark Bay that included present-day Glassboro Township and most of Burlington Township. In 1764, Colonel John Smith purchased from the Dutch control of {Newark} Bay 1/4 mile (0.6 km) wide by 3/8 mile (1 km) long and bounded by present-day Cherry Hill, South Brunswick Township and East Brunswick Township on the north, south, east and west while Fort Nassau lay within what are now North Brunswick Township and Easton Township on the east bank of Newark Bay; these boundaries remain largely unchanged to this day. In 1795 during Revolutionary War General George Washington's forces crossed over from Trenton into New Jersey to reinforce British Army General Howe's army besieging Philadelphia under siege from December 14–25,1795 until January 5th when Howe's army retreated back across Delaware River with heavy losses; henceforth all references to "Philadelphia" referred to those days as "the siege of Trenton." On October 6th following Washington's crossing into Pennsylvania he moved his headquarters northeastward along Ridge Road near Princeton where he encampment would remain until September 19th when Howe called off his assault upon Philadelphia after achieving failures against two numerically superior American forces totaling nearly 100 regiments under Major General Sir Charles Cornwallis who led an effort known as "Haviland Expedition". Aftermath saw more than 10 000 British casualties including 6800 prisoners who were paroled only after their skin was peeled off so that no recognition could be given them should they escape or be captured alive by Americans during future operations; Hessian troops also took part in this unsuccessful campaign which further impaired British morale leading to their surrender at Yorktown six weeks later on October 26th for a total cost estimated at $81 million(equivalent to $2 billion in 2009). Glassboro, New Jersey is a small town located in Middlesex County, New Jersey. It was incorporated as a town on December 14, 1868, and became a city on November 3, 1911. The population of Glassboro was 17,898 at the 2010 census. Glassboro is the fourth-most populous municipality in Middlesex County and the most populous municipality within 10 miles of Philadelphia. The borough of Glassboro includes much of what is now the city of Glassboro and was once part of the Township of Rowan. The first settler to come to what is now glassborough was Nicholas J. Fenton who arrived in 1814. He built a log cabin on his farmstead which he called "Fenton's Ford." A few years later he married Mary Cook and they began to raise crops around their farmstead. In 1827 Nicholas Fenton's son John Fenton took over farming operations from his father and named his house "Fenton's House" after his father's original property holdings in Rowan Township. John Fenton bought out Nicholas J.'s share in 1829, continuing to run the business until his death in 1862 when it passed along through inheritance to grandson John Lennon (1862-1941). John Lennon continued running it with help from two assistants for many years before selling it to George Darrow in 1923 for $10,000 cash only - an event that helped start Glassboros Economic Development Corporation (GEDC) which still exists today as one of its main functions. In 1865 Abraham Lincoln visited Rowan Township while campaigning for office; during this trip he stopped at Mr. Fentons home where he had dinner with Mr., Mrs., Drs., & Children (now known as The White House Historical Society) attended by Governor Andrew Johnson who also dined there that evening prior to going northward into Pennsylvania Campaigning Circles early next morning – all evidence suggests Abraham Lincoln spent time at Mr.(Mrs.)(Dr.)(Children)'s home rather than attend any campaign events or meet any key political figures while living in Elizabethtown Township specifically! It wasn't until 1898 when civic activist Harry Wetherbee purchased land adjoining Mr.(Mrs.)(Dr.)('s) home which would eventually become part ofglassborough township limits making glassborough an official City on November 3rd 1911! During World War II many factories were created here such as: Monmouth Electric Company (1945), PT boat builder Raytheon Plastic Boat Works (1946), Pottstown Forge Works Incorporated (1948), Dow Corning Rubber Products plant 1945-1950/51/52; Bethlehem Steel Corporation plant 1941-1945/46; Curtiss Aircraft Factory 1942-1945/47 etc….The area saw heavy bombing raids during WWII including both days when Manhattan Beach Naval Air Station stood tall like a model citizen woman holding rainbow flags flying high over downtown Manhattan beachesheadlines soon changed again with new businesses being founded such as: Verizon Wireless Communications Headquarters building 1947 – based off 7th Avenue near Center Street name change coming about because then Mayor James McGowan vetoed bill allowing cellular phone service starting up near airport this led to competition for long term leases with companies such as AT&T company HQ built right next door…..After war ended many plants closed down but some such as: Pottstown Forge Works Incorporated reopened after being acquired by Phelps Dodge corporation 1954 Savvy’s Clothing Store opened 1961 followed by Checkers Pizza 1966 moved from store front onto veterans Memorial Drive becoming one Of NJ’s First Chain Pizza restaurants
