In 1837, David Rice founded the town of Dunellen and named it for his birthplace and home town of Dunellen, Pennsylvania. The township was formed on April 14, 1868 from parts of Monmouth Township. A post office called Glassboro was established in 1876 and remained in operation until 1959. The borough became an incorporated municipality on October 1st, 1960. The glass industry started to take off in Glassboro after a local man discovered new lead mines near his house by chance while mapping properties for a real estate development he was working on behalf of his clients. By 1865 there were more than 60 glass manufacturers operating throughout New Jersey with production totaling over 2 million pieces per year statewide
