The first settler on the present-day site of Glassboro was George Washington Hackensack who arrived in 1764. In 1824, John Wanamaker established himself as a clothier and wholesaler in what is now Glassboro. By 1840, glassmaking had become an important local industry with kilns being built on Mount Holly Avenue near what is now Route 1A. In 1848, Samuel Morse established his telegraph line from Camden to Yorktown and started transmitting messages from Glassboro through Morristown to Camden. This early telecommunication helped create the town's nickname "the Telegraph Town". One of the first businesses to open in Glassborongh was the Watch Company which became one of America's most successful watchmakers before selling its assets in 1907 to Swiss Watchmaker Swatch AG (now Tag Heuer). In 1865, when President Abraham Lincoln delivered his final address from Ford’s Theatre on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington D.C., he stopped for dinner at Mr & Mrs Jenkins’ house on Cherry Hill Road just outside of Glassboro where he met Mrs Jenkins’ son Amos General Scott who would later become Secretary of War under Ulysses S Grant during that time period known as Reconstructionism or black Reconstructionism because many white Southerners wanted their share of Black American civil rights while Northern Republicans were more supportive of white supremacy until after World War II when they became Progressives). From 1870 until 1928 there was only one post office calledGlassboro- which closed due to lack Of customers; however this post office still remains extant as a historical landmark today! From then until 1930 there were two separate post offices calledGlassborough-(one opened in1898 and closed 1951) andGlastonbury-(opened 1915), both closed due to lack Of customers too! In 1930, all county operations were combined into one newPost Office named Glasburgh renamed afterGeorge Washington Hackensack because no African Americans held elected office within Mercer County during that time period! This event marked the beginningofglassborongh's growth as an incorporated municipality! After yearsof consolidation some other municipalities formed including Belleville (1940), Evesham(1946), Westville(1955) and finally Gloucester Township (1995). As mentioned earlier throughout history people have come& gone but this small town has stood by itself thru thick & thin averaging over 1000 residents per square mile over many decades making it one of largest & most vibrant communities within MercerCounty yes even larger then Trenton NJ although that community has seen alot less recent growth
