Garfield, New Jersey was founded in 1798 by John Garfield. The town was named after John's father, who had come to America from England. The Garfield family operated a small farm until they sold it in 1824 and began to build a house. In 1830, the Garfield family married Mary Magdalen Smith and started a small grocery business. They also built a two-story home on the property. In 1853, the Garfields donated land to become what is now Garfield Township. They continued to operate their grocery store until 1902 when they closed it down due to the Depression. The Garfields also donated land for what is now Union College (now Rutgers University) in 1903 and taught there until 1915. From 1916-1918, they served as president of the Township Board of Education. In 1922, John Garfield died and his wife became Mrs. Garfield Hahnemann (she would later marry Yale classmate Edward Hahnemann). After John's death, Mrs. Hahnemann ran the grocery store with her son George Berenson for many years before selling it in 1986 to Tom Monaghan of Neptune Beach for $1 million dollars ($8 million today).
Garfield was founded in 1795 by John Garfield and his wife, Susannah. The town was named for the Garfield family, who were long residents of the area. The first settler in Garfield was James Caldwell. In 1814, a post office was established in the town. By 1824, there were five churches in the town and twelve businesses. In 1830, a school was built in Garfield. A blacksmith shop and grist mill were also constructed that year. In 1834, a sawmill and grist mill were added to the town. Two years later, a flour mill and three shops were added to the mix. By 1840, there were twenty-four buildings in Garfield. The population had grown to over one hundred residents by 1860. That year saw another growth spur with construction of a railroad into the town from Trenton Township via Conshohocken Creek bedding (now called Catawba Boulevard). This track linked up with an existing road leading from Philadelphia to Camden County through Middlesex Township and then on to Carteret County and Newark Delaware before terminating at Bound Brook station near modern day Uniontown Pennsylvania; this new line increased traffic significantly for local merchants as well as bringing fresh produce direct to consumers’ doorsteps! The Merchants Association of America was formed in 1863 which helped grow numbers of small businessmen withinGarfield while also promoting economic development within its borders
