Garfield was founded in 1868 by John Garfield, a Quaker and abolitionist. The townspeople were so supportive of the new community that they offered to contribute land for a courthouse and jail. In 1902, Garfield was renamed after Grover Cleveland, the first U.S. president to be impeached on grounds of corruption. The citywide celebration of Grover Cleveland's birthday is still held annually in honor of this important figure in Garfield history. The early years of Garfield were difficult as there was little money to be had and few friends to help out. But through hard work and determination, the townspeople soon became successful merchants, farmers, and citizens. By 1920, their support for Grover Cleveland had paid off: the city government gave them a library, school district, parkland, and other important services. Today it is safe to say that Garfield is one of the most thriving communities in New Jersey – thanks largely to its strong community spirit! This spirit has been embodied by its residents since 1868 when John Garfield started everything here with his own two hands!

The name Garfield comes from General Washington's encampment on the site in 1777. It was given to him because of his resemblance to the British general and statesman George Washington. In 1879, James J. Lynch bought 8 acres (3 km2) of land east of Market Street for $1,000 and dedicated it as Garfield Park. In 1903, he donated another acre (0.4 km2) to make into a public library which still stands today at its original location on Garland Avenue between Cumberland and West streets. On July 4th, 1886, Garfield lost an election against incumbent Democrat John Pemberton by just 1 vote due to fraudulence allegations made against him by challenger William Cullen Bryant Jr.. On November 2nd of that year he became Mayor of Camden with 42% of the vote as opposed to Pemberton's 58%. He served two terms before retiring from office in 1890 due to poor health; however he continued to reside in Camden until his death there on October 15th of that year at the age 84 years old.
