Garfield is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 12,569 at the 2010 census. Garfield is home to the Garfield High School and the Garfield Middle School. It is also home to the Garfield Park Conservatory of plants and trees. In addition to its high school and middle school students, the town has a small number of children attending local schools that are not within township boundaries. Garfield was first settled by English traders and farmers in 1795. That same year, Colonel George Washington's forces were quartered there for six months during their campaign against France in North America before returning home. The area around present-day Garfield Heights was part of what was then West Mercer Township (now known as East Brunswick). The first post office in this township was established on March 15, 1800, under the name "West Side". On November 7th of that year, an act was passed by Congress titled "An Act forthe Better Regulation of Commerce among Foreign Nations", which created a new government for West Mercer Township called the "Mercer County Board of Chosen Freeholders". The first store in what is now Garfield Heights opened its doors on October 28th, 1828. At that time it consisted of three rooms with a capacity of five people each. From 1830 through 1865 there were only two stores open in town – one by John Jagger and one by James Mowbray – both closed due to lack of customers or competition from other businesses operating at that time near Princeton Junction line Railroad mainline where Greenwood Cutoff intersected with NJ Transit's Trenton Line going southward into Pennsylvania State University campus station Amtrak Station Newark Terminal Train Station; however those days seem like ancient history when compared to today’s Ivanhoe Hardware Store located on Main Street just east of PNC Park across from Wegmans Supermarket next door across street from Verizon Wireless store as well as several antique stores and gift shops located throughout downtown including Oneonta Avenue between 3rd & 4th Streets along Ives Road - today’s Boulevard Center Plaza Shopping center which includes Macy’s Department Store、 Jones Soda Shop、 Dillard’s Department Store along with several restaurants including Subway sandwich shop、 Starbucks Coffee Houseounge as well as numerous massages parlors various hair salons etc., all without any traffic lights or stop signs!
