Garfield is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. Garfield was founded in 1799 as part of Township 3 (northwest of Newark). The first settler in what would become Garfield was Nicholas de Gardiner. In 1824, Township 2 (southwest of Garfield) and parts of Township 1 were annexed to form new township 3 which became Garfield. The first rifle stock company in America was organized at this time by Nicholas de Gardiner and John Sargent in what became known as "Garfield Rifle Company". This company provided rifles for militia service during the American Revolution. The company also built a rifle factory in nearby West Orange and manufactured firearms until 1800 when it merged with another rifle company to form "Drewry & Son" Rifle Factory where guns continued to be made until 1857. This merger created one of the largest rifle companies in the world with a roster that included designs from Samuel Colt including his famous revolver, the revolvers later called “ Garfields” which became standard issue sidearms for most law enforcement agencies around the world. In 1858, Robert Epps bought out Drewry & Son and changed its name to "Epps Rifle Factory." At Epps Rifle Factory, rifles were produced under license from various gunmakers such as Smith & Wesson and Winchester Repeating Arms Company. Through these licenses, Epps managed to produce some very high quality firearms that are still sought after today. One example is their Model 8-barrel shotgun which has been used by law enforcement agencies all over the world since its introduction back in 1865! In 1902, Harrington & Richardson took over Epps Rifle Factory and produced shotguns there until 1957 when they sold it off to Remington Arms Corporation who kept it moving forward until 2001 when it finally closed down due to lack of customer demand!

The first rifle club in Garfield was organized on October 3rd, 1814 when three men from New York City met at a tavern to discuss rifles. It wasn't until 1837 that the first shooting match was held at a schoolhouse. The first national rifle competition was held in 1839 and Garfield played a significant role in organizing it. In 1861, he served as president of the National Rifle Association.
Garfield is a borough in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 6,451 at the 2010 census. Garfield is part of the Philadelphia–Camden–Wilkes-Barre, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Garfield was formed on April 14, 1814 from parts of Westampton Township and Plainsboro Township. On July 1, 1868 it merged with the adjacent borough of Camden to form the newly created city of Camden. On January 1, 1896 Garfield became one of three municipalities within the new Princeton Consolidated Borough which also included Lawrenceville and Southwicktown as well as portions of Princeton Junction and North Brunswick Township. The municipality ceased to exist on December 31, 1951 when all its land was taken over by Newark City. On May 15th 1905 a group led by Mayor John Fenton petitioned for annexation into Newark City because they felt that their community would be better served by living within Newark than in separate Garfield Borough. The petition received signatures from majority vote from Garfield residents and on October 7th 1905 an act were passed annexing Garfield to Newark City effective November 1st 1905. On December 12th 1909 Leonard Wintz announced his candidacy for Mayor against incumbent John Fenton who had been chosen Vice President of the United States under Woodrow Wilson two years earlier during World War I but lost to Alfred Ewing in a close run election campaign. In 1916 Wintz ran for mayor again but this time was successful against incumbent J H Sloan who had held office since 1912 despite being opposed by Wintz. In 1966 Edwin Coyle won an upset victory over Norton Myers in a mayoral race that saw suburban African Americans gain political power for the first time in American history
