Garfield is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,878 at the 2010 census. The name Garfield comes from the Garwood family which settled there in 1798. Garfield was founded by Adam Garwood and his brother John Garwood on October 15, 1798, as a small farming community west of Maple Shade. They named their land "Garfield" after the family's two brothers who were killed in action during the French and Indian War. In 1814, when Huntingdon County was split into three parts based on political boundaries developed during the American Revolution (the eastern part became Union Township while the western part became Hunterdon Township), Garfield joined the newly formedHunterdon Township. The first post office in Garfield opened on December 9, 1814, under the name of Westville; it closed on January 1, 1865 because of changes in postal law that changed appellations to townships. The present Garfield post office opened on February 14th, 1886. In 1850, when Morrisania and other villages were established within Hunterdon Township for people working along riverboats moored near Morristown traffic stopped coming to town because they could get more goods and services from those villages closer to Princeton than from Garfield; so Garrison got its first store built by Nathan Myrick just north of what is now Main Street (then also called Dutch Neck Road). By 1880 there were ten stores/cafes in town with a population under 1,000 residents; all but one had been closed by then due to various factors including advancements made by technological advances such as electricity that made life easier for retailers and increased competition from Jersey City-based grocers who had moved into central New Jersey since abolitionism began here in 1834-37 drove prices up 100%. However most businesses continued operation until at least 1940s although many storefronts have been windowsless or roofless over time due primarily to economic reasons such as prohibition which caused almost all manufacturing jobs lost during1920s–30s INCLUDING MANUFACTURING OF FIRE extinguishers! In 1940 only four stores still open: Myrick’s hardware store (now demolished), J & B Realty Co., National Grid Company Store #4A (& now occupied by PNC Bank), and Garland Hardware Company which still operates today out of 3rd Floor GARLAND HARDWARE CO., INC., 4TH STREET AND MAIN STREET
