Garfield is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,813 at the 2010 census. Garfield was incorporated as a borough on April 20, 1892, from portions of Clifton Township. On July 16, 1898, Garfield became part of Washington Township. On February 17, 1902, it merged with Butler Township to form Mercer County. The borough of Garfield dissolved on October 15th of that year and all municipal functions were transferred to the newly created township of Butler. On November 5th 1905 the first post office in Mercer County was opened in Garfield by Wm H Fenton with the name "Barton". It continued to serve until 1914 when it changed its name to "Garfield". On December 4th 1916 the first public school opened in Union County which served students from both Mercer and Washington Townships. The first store built in Union County was a general store built by Geo Houlihan and his son David on what is now Route 22 near present-day Park Avenue. It operated for about a year before closing due to financial troubles. A second store operated for about two years before being closed as well due largely to competition from larger stores opening up around this time in nearby Trenton and Princeton. The failure of these two stores led to some consolidation within the community and eventually an open market day where any business could sell goods anywhere within 100 feet of their establishment was allowed without charge

The construction of Interstate 95 made traveling between New York City and Philadelphia more convenient for residents in southeastern Pennsylvania and northern Delaware; this also led to increased development in neighboring towns such as West Milford Township which were incorporated into I-95 highway traffic congestion became an issue for residents of Garland because they could no longer rely on trains to transport their goods throughout their communities
