Garfield is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,836 at the 2010 census. Garfield has a Census-designated place (CDP) for its residents, which includes most of the borough's land and water areas. The CDP had a population of 10,362 as of the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit what is now Garfield were Dutch settlers in 1624 who named it "Kershaw". The area that would become Garfield was first settled by Scotch-Irish pioneers in 1756 when they arrived from Ulster Province. One early settler, John Burchardt, built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1814, Abraham Lincoln and four other farmers founded the town of Garfield on land that they had bought from Robert Livingston after he was expelled from New York City for supporting George Washington's impeachment trial. In 1850, John Noyes donated land to make way forwhat would eventually be Garfield High School; the same year also saw the opening of the first post office in the borough boundaries - "Garfield Township". The Borough of Garfield was formed on December 1st 1872 via an act passed by New Jersey General Assembly with approval from President Ulysses S. Grant following his reelection campaign in November 1870. Garfield experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its strategic location as one of only two NJ military posts within 15 miles (24 km) of Manhattan Beach – both open to Allied troops and providing essential beachhead support against Axis forces during North Africa and Europe respectively. After hostilities ended in 1945, many factories closed or relocated their operations to other parts ofNJ during what came to be called “the Great Shift” – but not Garfield Industries which continued robust economic development until recently despite having no physical presence outside NJ since 1942). On July 8th 1953 Mayor James Jankiewicz designated part ofOld Bridge Landingouseless because all shipping through that stretch had stopped due to damage caused by Hurricane Betsy; however this didn’t stop developers from building a series of high-rise apartments near where Today’s Penn Station stands today just south Of Market Street; these apartment towers remain unoccupied today but are still viewable from Old Bridge Landing Rd.. In 1955 Mayor James Jankiewicz designated partofOld Bridge Landingouseless because all shipping through that stretch had stopped due to damage caused by Hurricane Betsy; however this didn’t stop developers from building a series of high-rise apartments near where Today’s Penn Station stands today just south Of Market Street; these apartment towers remain unoccupied today but are still viewable from Old Bridge Landing Rd.. On October 30th 1959 Mayor James Jankiewicz designated portionsof present day Harrisonburg and Park Ridge as separate municipalities within Garfield after becoming aware that those villages were using shared services such as police departments etc., without proper written agreement between village heads/ mayors? This prompted action by then Borough President Maurice Levy who convened an executive committee consisting OF himself Chairman Edward Teller (later Directorates Dept.), Julius Maloney (futuremayor), Irving Shapiro (former Corporation Counsel), Irving Wexler (current zoning administrator) & myself chaired by myself with input From Borough President Maurice Levy which recommended creation OF our own Parks Department including Police Sergeant Rank For Park Ridge officials & establishing limits To Village Services That Be Provided By Harrisonburg authorities
