Garfield is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,829 at the 2010 census. They named their new community after American president James K. Polk. A post office called Garfield was established in 1846, and remained open until 1967 when it was combined with Trenton to form the newly formed Mercer County government. In 2006, Mayor Papp retired after serving for 27 years and Garner mayoral candidates John Fenton and Fred Ziegler were elected to succeed him. In 2007, the Township Council passed a resolution requiring all businesses within its boundaries to have an annual fire safety audit conducted by an independent consultant as part of their township's efforts to improve fire safety measures across the municipality. This measure became effective on October 1st 2007 and has since been met with mixed reactions from businesses who argue that audits are not necessary or expensive enough while others say they have found no issues with fire Safety procedures in previous audits conducted by the Township Council

In 1951, the town annexed part of Hamilton Township which had a population of about 150 people.
