Garfield, New Jersey is home to one of the mostGun-triggered events in American history. On November 5th, 1795, a group of men from Garfield decided to take matters into their own hands and rob a local store. The event that followed is now considered to be a classic case of gun violence. One man was killed and three others were injured as a result of the robbery. The tragedy served as an impetus for the enactment of the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution, which protects Americans' right to bear arms.

Garfield is part of the Camden–Guildwood–West Camden, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was first settled by Dutch and English colonists in 1664. The town name may be derived from the Scottish Garvin clan who were landowners there during colonial times. Garfield had its peak population in the early 1800s when over 10,000 people lived there. However, since then it has slowly declined as a result of various factors such as suburbanization and commuting to larger cities. The current municipal government was formed on November 3rd, 1997 after years of discussion between residents and local officials. Garfield is located on Route 202 approximately 12 miles (19 km) southwest of Philadelphia and 8 miles (13 km) northeast of Camden Garfield was first mentioned in 1664 when Dutch colonists named it "Garvinburgh". In 1714, landowner Nicholas van der Valk sold some properties in what became Garfield to John Turnbull for £3 sterling (£ 66 US). In 1802-1803, George Washington surveyed and platferred federal land within present-day Garfield Township for development into Upland Land Company townships which eventually became Burlington County. On July 2nd 1814 Andrew Gregg purchased from Nicholas van der Valk 640 acres (24 ha) northwest of present day Garfield Township for $5 per acre ($ 0 . 04 US/ha). At that time only one man had property north of Princeton Junction with access to the Susquehanna River: Andrew Gregg’s farmstead known today as “The Forrests” situated east-northeast of present day Garrison Road off Interstate 95 southbound just past milepost 82 ([mile]). By 1830 nearly all white settlers had left or been driven out by Native Americans; including most notably Jacob Abbott who lost his home at “The Forrests” in December 1830 [-[year]]. In 1870 Benjamin Potter leased 1,236 acres (500 ha), now much of northeastern parts of Garrison Township from Andrew Gregg for $0 . 005 per acre ($ 0 . 03 US/ha). Potter also acquired 100 acres (40 ha), now much of southeastern parts of Garrison Township from Abram Brown for $0 . 01 per acre ($ 0 . 05 US/ha). Potter developed this area into what is today northwestern Garrison Township where he built Potter's Mills which employed 400 workers during his lifetime (~1800 men & women)[.] Finally Potters Mills burned down in 1881 while being rebuilt following damage suffered during a rainstorm…..the fire destroyed about 60% or all evidence oldest buildings still standing though many have been demolished replaced with homes more recent growth has obscured this fact….The mills are popular tourist destinations but their heyday may have largely passed away due to their proximity to larger industrial centers like Trenton & Atlantic City…today they are only remnants remaining next to an interstate highway [I-95] running through their territory
