Garfield, New Jersey is a small town in Union County that was once known for its Garfield the Dinosaur amusement park. The town was founded in 1892 by a group of farmers and their families who were looking to escape farm life. The town was named after Benjamin Franklin Garfield, the 20th president of the United States. The first post office in Garfield opened on October 1, 1892. In 1907, the town annexed the nearby village of Haverhill. The city of Camden had been established in 1905 and quickly grew around it. By 1916, there were only 10 residents living in Garfield proper while 40 lived in Haverhill and Camden combined. In 1922, brickworks began to be built near the town center and soon enough there were several factories located within walking distance of each other as well as housing developments for workers. At this point, most people in neighboring towns had already left for more developed areas or chosen to move away altogether due to high taxes and lack of opportunities back then. In 1924, local resident John Cavanaugh started a radio station called WKRR which would become one of the most popular talk stations throughout New Jersey during the 1920s and 1930s. During World War II, many residents worked at various munitions plants across New Jersey but few returned home after hostilities ended; some did however live through internment camps during that time period
Garfield was founded in 1795 by John Garfield and his wife, Martha. The town was named for the then-new Garfield County, Pennsylvania, which had been organized in 1784. It originally consisted of only a small area around the now-defunct Garfield Mill. In 1892, John Garfield donated land to the town for a new library. In 1896, the town annexed portions of Township 15 (now Maple Shade Township) and added it to its boundaries. In 1907, Garfield received its first municipal water supply from a well located east of town on Route 22. The population of Garfield peaked at 1,500 in 1916 and declined to 914 during World War I; however, it regained some population after the cessation of hostilities in 1918 and remained above 1,000 until 1945. During World War II, the local economy was primarily based on agriculture with a few manufacturing businesses operating; however, after the war ended there were no significant changes until the early 21st century whenrawn infrastructure began to improve as more people moved intotown because of development within nearby Jersey City and Hackensack Junction
