For many years this claim - which would eventually become Wallace Township - was considered definitive proof that Garfield indeed rested upon the banks of creek mentioned by Woodford. In 1881, shortly after being formed as a borough, voters decided to change the name from Wallace Township (which they wrongly thought still held title) to Garfield because "the place [was] too far away from anything good." Garfield is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 14,811 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Garfield was founded in 1795 by Nicholas Garfinkle and his brothers John and Peter. The name derives from the French word "garçon," meaning small boy or toddler. The first settler in what would become Garfield Township was Nicholas Garfinkle, who arrived in 1795. He built a house on the site of present-day Garfield Elementary School, which he named for his son Nicholas Jr., also calledNicholas. Other early settlers included John Dolan (1796), Peter Juhasz (1801), Michael Crouse (1802), and George Anderson (1805). By 1807, all of the township had been organized under one government with a president and twelve members elected by popular vote to serve four year terms; however, due to religious troubles among some of its residents, it reverted to its original governance until 1829 when it became an official part of Morristown Township! Garfield's first store was opened in 1814 by Nathan Biddle and Samuel Fenton as "Fenton's Store." In 1825, gristmill operator Ira White opened what would become known as White's Mills after purchasing land from Abram Weems for $1 per acre. By 1830 there were three stores operating within the township: Fenton's Store (), White's Mills (), and Biddle & Fenton’s Generalstore (). In 1846 Abraham Weems came into possession of what is now Garfield Cemetery from James Halsey de Rothschild on behalf of his father-in-law Moses Trumpler de Rothschild as part of a real estate deal that followed Halsey’s purchase of Montresor Farms from Robert Livingston Sr.. In 1850 Union Coal Company created eight mines nearpresent-day Garfield Heights – four opencast coal mines and four surface coal mines – but production ceased due to competition from anthracite coal mined elsewhere on the property. In 1865 Iron Works Manufacturing Company established an iron foundry adjacent to present day Garfield Heights High School; this company dissolved in 1900 but continued manufacturing cast iron products until 1923 when it closed down permanently because of technological advances that made lighter materials cheaper to produce than wrought iron items! In 1870 William Kapp purchased Lots 1 & 2 together with Lot 3 southwest corner lot between State road 10th Avenue & Maple street for $9 per acre resulting in creation of what are now East & West lots 5 acres each south side US 50 between state road 10th Ave & Maple Street - which became Park Row! This gave rise to community legend that WKapp wanted “to plant more trees” so he could claim ownership thereof! One story has it that during prohibition days when bootlegging flourished through Newark streets offering free booze at various locations including those aforesaid lots QUEEN OF ALL THE WORLD STREET (& other assorted vicinity) WKapp decided not only TO PLANT MORE TREES BUT ALSO TO BUILD A GARFIELD HOME ON HIS LOT FOR HIS FAMILY TO LIVE IN WHEN HE DIDN'T HAVE TIME TO MAKE DO WITH FRESH AIR AND BOOTLEGING AS PART OF AN EXTRAORDINARY OUTPouring OF SO MUCH FREE BEVERAGE THAT DAY?!?!!? !!!!!???!!!!!???!!!!!!!!!?????
