Garfield is a borough in the U.S. state of New Jersey, located on the southern shore of Long Island Sound. As of 2010, Garfield had a population of 9,553. On November 8, 2009, voters passed an referendum authorizing annexation by East Rutherford into the newly formed Garfield Borough with no opposition from that municipality nor from any other boroughs in the township until such time as Township officials decide whether or not to annex all or part of Amity Township back into their respective borders yet again subject to referendum vote by residents thereon. On January 1st 2020 it was announced that East Rutherford will be joining the newly formed Garfield Borough effective immediately following its annexation by neighboring Garfield after years long talks between both municipalities
Garfield was founded in 1799 by John Garfield, a Revolutionary War veteran and carpenter. The town was named for John's ancestor, who had settled in the area in 1757. The first post office was established in 1805. In 1814, the town became part of Union County. By 1840, it had a population of 100 people. During the American Civil War, Garfield served as a captain in the Union army and lost an arm at battle Cumberland Gap. After the war, he moved to New York City and became an insurance salesman. He died in 1865 at age 73 years old.
