Garfield, New Jersey is a town of about 16,000 people located in the Union County region of New Jersey. The community was founded in 1834 by pioneers who arrived from Virginia and Maryland. In 1868, the Garfield gunsmith shop, which still stands today, was built to serve the local rifle and shotgun manufacturers. The shop became a major center for gunsmithing in Garfield and served as such until around 1970. Over that time period, it produced arms for many American presidents and military leaders including Ulysses S. Grant, James Buchanan, George Washington Carver and Abraham Lincoln. The shop closed its doors in 1970 but continues to be open as a museum honoring firearm manufacturing in Garfield County. The first guns manufactured at the store were Sharps rifles which were popular among settlers during the early days of Garfield Township. By 1870-71, however, shotguns had become more popular so the store began selling Winchesters which soon became known as "Garfield's favorite weapon." Eventually other brands of handguns followed suit including Smith & Wesson revolvers (1872), Colt pistols (1875) and Remington rifles (1880). In 1971-1972 an era of change came to Garfield when two new businesses opened up: Kapp's Sporting Goods – a supply store that sold ammunition and sporting goods; and Doyle’s Gun Shop – which specialized in gun repair service and repairs on firearms not related to shooting or hunting. A few years earlier John Fenton had opened his own handgun shop adjacent to Kapp's Sporting Goods across from State Street in downtown Girardville. The Garfield family continued to live in the town until 1800, when they moved to nearby Rahway. In 1813, Garfield married Rachelle Emerson and their first child was born in Rahway. The couple moved back to Garfield in 1821 and had two more children before moving permanently to New Jersey in 1830. They resided here until Rachelle died in 1865. After her death, John became a successful merchant and political figure; he served as mayor of Newark from 1868 to 1870 and as governor of New Jersey from 1875 to 1880. He is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Newark.
