Garfield, New Jersey is home to the oldest continuously operating gun cleaning business in the United States. The business has been in operation since 1878, and still employs up to 50 people today. The business began as a small cottage industry in rural Garfield by two men who pooled their resources to clean guns for their friends and family. In 1878, one of these men, John Pugh, opened his own shop and continued to sell cleaning supplies and guns until he retired in 1944. His son, John Pugh Jr., took over the business when he died in 1984. Today, The Gun Cleaning Company is run by three generations of Pughs—John III (the current owner), his wife Deborah (who works part-time), and their son John IV ( CEO). They continue to run the company with passion because they believe that it’s important for everyone involved in this important industry to be responsible and hands-on with their work. On December 12, 1984, Garland Municipal Court issued an order that all residents must present both driver's licenses and proof of residency before issuing permits or renewing voter registrations; this order also required polling places to close at 5 p.m., effective January 1st following each general election day). The application process for township officeholders continued unchanged until May 4th, 1988 when Councilwoman Dawn Hirschwald became the first woman elected as township president after being appointed by Mayor Edward Jaffe Jr.. On July 8th 2017 it was announced that Mayor Edward Jaffe Jr.'s son would succeed him as mayor effective October 7th 2017 due to his father's death earlier that year but immediately resigned due to health issues

Garfield was founded by James Garfield and his family in 1825 as a small village on the border of Mercer and Sussex counties. It became a borough in 1876 and added to the city of Newark on December 3, 1911. The first mayor of Garfield was John Fenton. The town's name is derived from James Garfield's birthplace in what is now part of West Babylon, Long Island which he also visited while living in Utica, New York City during this time frame. In 1825 when he arrived in America with his family from Scotland-Garfield had only just turned 12 years old-Garfield's father died soon after their arrival hereabouts leaving James and his mother to fend for themselves and raise James & siblings under difficult conditions until they could find new land to settle on or emigrate off of their native soil ( Located just east of present day Garden State Parkway). As per legend one evening shortly thereafter when Mr. Garfield was out playing with some neighbors young John Fenton came over to see him play and offered him work picking apples off the tree next door if he would stay for dinner that night; Garfield gratefully agreed! From then on young John would come over every evening to help Mr. Garfields father pick apples as an odd jobs opportunity opened up for him because there were no other means available for him then! After several years working hard alongside young John Fenton this gave rise to what we know today as "Abeamegarf"meaning "John Fielding's Orchard". Over time many other families who resided within walking distance started coming into contact with these two men who had something special each & started calling them 'Mr.' & 'Garrulous' because that's all they knew how to call them back then! As word spread about these guys doing volunteer work together it quickly escalated into an agricultural enterprise known today as "The GARFIELD Orchard." eventually taking on more than just apple picking duties; becoming well known for its huckleberries ( raspberries ), grapes etc...Today The GARFIELD Orchard still features prominently among its residents thanks largely to Abeamegarf’s indefatigable efforts including but not limited to: herb garden, fruit orchard/garden, community hall/pool hall, annual 5K run/walk etc...In addition thereto the GARFIELD Orchard has been hometo numerous local restaurants including Pabst Blue Ribbon Brewery®, Dutch Bros., Subway®, KFC®, Dick’s Sporting Goods®, JT’s seafood restaurant etc...Over time many accomplishments have been made by The GARFIELD Orchard such as being awarded plaques by various municipalities recognizing their contribution thereto such as Borough Of Caldwell (2002), Township Of Harrison (2005), Hunterdon County Health Department(2007)....The full story behind Why We Love Our Local Apple Pie can be found at www.garfieldnjgov website
Garfield was founded in 1795 by George Washington, who named it after his neighbor, the Present-day Garfield County. The first post office was established in 1802. In 1850, the town had a population of 200 and became a borough. The borough was dissolved in 1868 and its land divided between three other towns: Bergen (now part of Hackensack), Paramus and Mount Laurel.
