Garfield, New Jersey was once one of the most gun-friendly communities in the United States. However, after a gunman killed three people and wounded six others at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut in December 2012, the Gun Owners of America organization began a campaign to make it more difficult for civilians to obtain firearms. In response to this effort, Garfield enacted a ban on all but essential gun cleaning supplies from being sold within the city limits. This measure effectively shut down small businesses that operated in the city and made it difficult for residents to keep their firearms clean. Garfield is a town in Burlington County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,868 at the 2010 census. Garfield is part of the Camden-Passaic-Trenton metropolitan area. The town was named for General James Garfield and became a borough in 1876. It was combined with Passaic Township on April 1, 1907 to form Garfield Borough. Garfield was founded by English colonists in 1685 as "Newburgh", after their capital city of London. The original land grant for the town included present-day Garfield Heights and portions of what are now South Brunswick and Westwood Avenues. In 1764, colonists granted lands to John Cadwallader Wright (brother of George Wright), who built a mill on the then known creek called Easton Creek that served as the town's first courthouse complex before moving it to his newsite in 1768. A post office was established at Garfield in 1800; it remained in operation until 1876 when it merged with Passaic Township to form Garfield Borough. The first mayor of Garfield borough was George Haggerty (1870–72). He succeeded Mayor Joby Johnson (1871–75) after Johnson withdrew from office due to ill health. In 1903, consolidation of municipalities within Burlington County necessitated the withdrawal of all boroughs except for those two which were retained within their respective townships until 1907 when they were combined into one municipality under then Mayor Cornelius Connick Jr.. In 1951, following passage by the New Jersey Legislature of Assembly Bill No. 173 which provided for legislative districts across Middlesex County instead of throughout Burlington County as had been done since 1917, all but one township – Gloucester Township – seceded from Burlington County and formed Monmouthshire Borough whileGarfield remained within its own municipality limits.. As a result of this change, six outof seven municipalities within Monmouthshire Borough became incorporated as separate municipalities: Atlantic City Municipal District; Belle Mead Municipal District; Brick Ridge Municipal District; Edison Municipal District; Greenwich Naval Shipyard Naval Auxiliary Base Naval Station Community Affairs Commission; and Lakewood Municipality* (*Lakewood annexed Rahway Township on October 12th 1985). As parteitively, Arlington Heights annexation took place on December 15th 1984 making it an eighth municipality within Monmouthshire Borough’s boundaries which has since become unrecognized by neighboring municipalities as Hurricane Sandy damaged or destroyed many homes and businesses located inside Arlington Heights borders including some Checkerboard Plaza located right next door where Amateur Radio Service operators have special license frequencies used for emergency communications during natural disasters

Garfield was first settled in 1770 by the Dutch and Swedes. The name "Garfield" comes from the Indian word garam meaning 'hollow.' In 1828, John Fenton developed what would become Garfield Heights and named it after his ancestor, James Garfield. The first schools in Garfield were local academies operated by Congregationalists. A schoolhouse was built in 1837 and used until 1850 when a new one was erected on High Street which served as the town's courthouse until 1861 when it became an academy again. In 1865, the high school moved to its current location on Market Street and remained there until 1953 when it became known as Garfield Junior-Senior High School
