Garfield, New Jersey is home to one of the most famous gun chokes in American history. The incident took place on November 5th, 1892 when two gunmen conducted an assassination attempt against Garfield's predecessor, President George Washington Pierce. One gunman was successful in shooting President Pierce but missed his intended target, a police officer named John J. Macdonald. This left the other gunman with a clear shot at Mr. Macdonald and he fired three times into the back of the officer's head, killing him instantly. This event is considered to be one of the worst mass shootings in United States history and has been cited as a factor in the increase in firearm violence across America.

Of the remaining 5% population (), 3% self-identified as black or African American and less than 1% reported being Asian or Pacific Islander
