Garfield is a community in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. Garfield is located on the east bank of the Passaic River and is bordered by Rahway to the north and west, Plainsboro to the south, and South Orange to the east. It was founded in 1794 as a Loyalist settlement on land purchased from Native Americans. The first settler, George Washington granting title in 1802, named it after General James Garfield who had died less than two years earlier while serving as U.S. President under Ulysses S. Grant during what was known as the Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1834, Garfield's parents moved their family to West Caldwell Township in Union County where they remained until his death in 1881; he was then buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery in West Caldwell Township. In 1888, when New Jersey became a state and gun regulation went into effect within its borders for the first time since 1665*, Garfield's zip code – 07010 – became one of only a few areas statewide with permits to carry handguns without an owner's permit or registration*! Garfield was founded in 1795 by John Garfield. The townspeople were farmers and their first structure was a log cabin. The town grew and became a village in 1825. In 1851, the Township of Garfield was established and the town prospered. In 1865, the township was merged into the city of Garfield Heights. In 1898, the City of Garfield Heights annexed the Township of Lyndhurst which had been part of the City for only two years. A new school board was formed with members from both townships and Garfield Heights became one school district with its own budget. On October 1, 1955, when New Jersey added its third congressional district to represent all of Bergen County, community officials decided to annex Lyndhurst as well so that all citizens in both townships would have representation on the new board. On May 12, 1957, Community Board 3 voted 5-4 to go ahead with annexation because it seemed like a fair decision given that both townships had been part of one municipality for so long without any say in how it operated or what it looked like. The final vote came after hourslong debate over whether or not to name either township “Garfield Heights” due to concern that some residents might feel left out if they didn’t have their own name associated with them within their communities again. After much discussion, Garfields council decided unanimously to name their township “ Lyndhurst” since this is where they originally belonged before becoming part of Garland Heights.
Garfield is a small town in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. Garfield is located on the south side of the Hackensack River and is part of the Bergen Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was founded in 1881 by farmers who moved from Connecticut. The first post office opened in Garfield on December 3, 1881, under the name of Northfield. The name was changed to Garfield on January 1, 1886. On July 15, 1907, the town became part of New Jersey when it was merged with Passaic County. Garfield has a large Presbyterian church organized in 1892 which seats 4500 people and hosts an annual festival celebrating Presbyterian faith and culture. There are also several schools in Garfield including: Garfield High School (9th-12th grades), Plattsburgh Intermediate School (grades 7-8), and Darien Middle School (grades 9-12). In addition to its public schools there are also private schools that serve students within the village boundaries: Sacred Heart Academy (grades PreK-5), Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic school (6th through 8th grades) and St Joseph’s Preparatory School for Boys (9th through 12th grades). Garfield's economy is based primarily on agriculture with livestock farming being a major component; however manufacturing has developed as well over time including textiles, shoe manufacturing, paper products and other products used by businesses throughout New Jersey as well as internationally.

Garfield is a small town in Morris County, New Jersey. The population was 1,521 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Garfield has a strong agricultural history, with crops such as corn and beans being grown here for centuries. The town also grows onions, celery, and other vegetables. The first European to visit what is now Garfield was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. He named it after his friend Saint George (Garland). In 1854, Garfield opened its post office under the name of Westville; this name lasted until 1915 when it changed to its current one. Garfield was incorporated as a village on March 14th, 1903. On May 5th of that year the Township of Morris annexed part of Garfield Village for economic reasons which continue to be used today by both municipalities as separate communities with their own police forces and school systems. In 1916, local businessman Frank Jaffe donated land to build what would become the first high school in the township- East High School still stands today on this property (now known as Park Friends Academy). A new elementary school followed in 1938 called Dearborn Heights Elementary before finally being renamed Garfield Jr./Sphinx Middle School in 1976 after Forrest Marshall's guidance program in that city inspired him to open an educational center there for inner-city boys aged 9-12 years old which he called Sphinx Middle School II. In 1984 another elementary school - Southside Elementary - merged into Dearborn Heights Elementary following moves made by then Superintendent Driscoll requiring all schools within Morris Township to have unification plans ready for opening day due to dwindling enrollment at each institution type from 1st through 5th grades combined without any prior notice given either party involved about the impending merger or alternative arrangements available should enrollment decline over time at any given institution type or if one party unilaterally terminated its unification plans before they were completely executed thereby resulting in declining enrollment at any given institution type; thus Southside Elementary merged into Dearborn Heights Elementary effective September 2nd 1984 pursuant to these provisions*.*
Garfield was founded in 1795 by Nicholas Garvey. The town grew rapidly due to the production of salt from the nearby Brandywine River. In 1848, Garfield was renamed for President James K. Polk. In 1905, the first high school in Garfield opened and it continues to serve as its current namesake.
